I just wanted to post how great animals are when you're dealing with depression. My cat just stole my yarn as I'm trying to learn how to knit. She's annoying but I don't know what I'd do without her. I'd rather have a dog as I think they're more sensitive to feelings and comforting for me, but I'm too depressed to walk it and take care of it right now. The cat is the 2nd best. She's actually a foster cat from the humane society but I think I'm about to adopt her. I've had her since February. I volunteer with the humane society. I'm going to a nursing home today to help the humane society take the animals there for the residents to interact with. I hope it helps some of them with their depression too. Does anyone else have animals that help them through their depression?

Our cat is the best. She's very affectionate and loves being picked up and cuddled, which comes in handy when I'm down since she pretty much provides instant unconditional love whenever I need it. There is something about a purring kitty that is really comforting, isn't there? She's definitely therapeutic for me, and an important member of our family.

I have two small very loving dogs. I find when feeling down that I ignore them. It's the first pup I had and his not real sister that I miss and grieve daily over. What's that mean? I do love the dogs I have now inside but can't let the feeling show? I try? Phillipa

Abso-freaking-lutely! I love my Kitty! He's the best! He means the world to me. I talk to him every day. I would be lost without him. I even make up songs to sing to him. I also would like a dog (in addition to, not instead of my cat), but its just more work than I think I can handle at the moment. I think its great that you help out at the humane society. I've been considering it myself.

You should definitely volunteer if you can find the energy. It's really rewarding. I'm lucky that the shelter here is kind of a 'come when you want' arrangement mostly, so that I can show up when I feel like it (and when it's warm) and not when I can't make myself go. Although, it would be nice to have a little more accountability to make myself go a bit more often... It's always rewarding when I find the energy to go though.
