This just came up in chat. I don't know the answer and I'm afraid of the tons of hits that will come up if I try to google "new" so does anybody know?
Are they the same as the little tiny red and white potatoes that you can buy or are those just little tiny potatoes? Is there an official definition of new or does it just relative to last years crop?
This came up because supposedly new potatoes are healthier. For that matter, is that true?
Any input appreciated.

in my kitchen that means the little red ones. i use them in cold salads and leave the skins on...prettier and healthier that way.

In my part of the world, new potatoes are just the small potatoes, usually harvested early and before the potato gets full size.
IMO, they are sweeter than the bigger potatoes. As far as being more healthy, I don't know, but perhaps it might be because people are more likely to eat the peel on new potatoes.

I've always thought of them as potatoes that are dug up when they're still small - red or white.
I think they taste milder & sweeter.

We call the little white ones "salt potatoes". They are cooked in brine and served in butter.....yum!

new spuds are in season now. well just comming to an end actually,they can come from the island of jersey or ingl;and ,the bit you missed ot is they dont have a tough skin you dont have to peel them. just wash a eat, fish an chips are loads better with new spuds as we brits call them,in the fish an chip shop,s they should be cooked in beef dripping an lard , not your ponssy oil , that way the fish an the chips have that loverly chestnut coulor an the bater on the fish is crispy ////////OLD inglish chip shop joke, there was a fight in the shop, a fish got battered by someone with a chip on his shoulder,

they are grown that small to be picked in summer for salad,s an roast dinners, old spuds are picken an november an ar not so sweet , but great for baked spuds a nog of butter an some grated cheese plus chips an roast,s but you have cut them to size
