Laptop survey

Posted by Dinah on June 26, 2009, at 7:51:17

This is the second time I'm having the motherboard replaced (per the phone technician's guess) in two years in my HP laptop. My last HP laptop was sent back to the factory for warranty service twice in the three year warranty.

My boss swears by Lenovo and says I won't forever be inconveniencing them if I get a Lenovo.

Are all laptops created equal? What experiences have you had?

Greg uses one routed to my computer so far so good. I myself find the typing keyboards hard to use and the words too small for me. Phillipa

Have had excellent service from our Dell.

If you need more technical input, ask me - I'll have to ask hubby LOL

i had all IBM , HP and Lenovo/IBM

ibm x40 with win xp, not widescreen: very good quality of keyboard, hinge, very stabil, it still works but because the x40 laptop is old after service pack 3 the laptop is just too slow.
I had a harddisk with everything installed and the useful recovery environment.

hp 5910p widescreen vista: also good solid like the lenovo, ordered the laptop without any operating system because I had the nerve to install everything myself. But that was not a good idea because this was very time consuming. Interestingly the accumulator (battery) didn't work first, after speaking with the customer service they sent one within 14 days. Then it worked.

x61s win xp sp3 no widescreen: because I liked the old x40 that still works but too slow I bought a x61s (slow voltage). Its approx. the same like x40 but with updated hardware. Is very fast with xp sp3 now.
x61s is no widescreen which I like and is very portable. With memorized key shortcuts and adjustements it can be possible to work confortable with smaller screens. Or it can be installed add-ins like littlefox, littlebird to have more screen space. If necessary the laptop can be connected to a big screen monitor.

vista is of no benefit over xp, its only the question how long xp is supported with drivers for devices.

the security, wireless and recovery possibilities are good. non widescreen is still available what I like. Never had hardware problems so far.

I would go with Lenovo.

There might be some spelling mistakes, sorry for that I am busy...

Hope this experience helps.

I know mac too, but I grow up with windows in secondary school (8086,286 CPU...) and I sometimes use all of these practical, free applications like Irfanview, paint.net, freecommander, ccleaner, VLC mediaplayer, Mozilla thunderbird, firefox, mozbackup.

sorry the long post I am also exercising with the little more smaller keyboard of x61s compared with the old x40.

I bought the x61s over ebay.com
http://stores.shop.ebay.com/AIT-Systems__W0QQ_armrsZ1

no problem with those guys, they also installed software on request and did some adjustments on demand costless.

Buying computer hardware isn't a good investment, amortization faster than cars.

warm regards

sdb

Also had excellent service from Dell and the one I have is pretty resilient seeing how crappy I treat it. If you have an expensive one the CompleteCare warranty is worth it - any accidental damage or spills and they replace it.

Using hubby's Dell Inspiron. He has had it just over a year and loves it. It has xp on it. I'd wait and get the new 7 coming out instead of Vista.

We have been really giving this a workout since my computer died.

Thanks guys!

After doing some research (and remembering that it really is a rapidly depreciating investment) I decided not to get a new computer at this moment. Maybe if it breaks again... It costs me a fair amount of lost work time.

I simply can't afford what I want. And with L coming out soon, and Windows not even mentioning Vista in their L advertisements (they refer to us loving XP and don't mention Vista at all), it seems like a bad time to buy.

After this repair, surely it will be another year or so before it breaks again. I hope.

At least I back up religiously. Knock wood.

I know you've decided not to get another computer, but I swear by Lenovo. I call them tanks, and I've only had two within the past 10 years. The first on lasted 7 years with no problems (it still runs).

Seldom

That's what my boss says.

Argh. I really would like to have a tank. But maybe I'll wait a year so that 7 is up and running first.

I don't swear but I had my ibm x40 approx nine years. It still works with xp but with all the service packs its too slow now. Never had one hardware problem. I wonder if Lenovo is overall the same quality than IBM was.

Again, computer hardware is a bad investment.
(Better save money and buy a house)

With cheap devices other than computers I had problems, repair more expensive than sell price and unfortunately it landed in the garbage. What that means is waste of money, waste of energy, waste of time, waste of natural rescources.

Well, if I did get a new one, my old (not old really - two years old with two motherboard replacements) laptop would go to my son. He uses an ancient desktop that's already died once. Since Katrina, I totally oppose desktops in New Orleans. A computer should be able to be evacuated with the family and pets. And it doesn't matter nearly as much if his computer needs to go to the shop for a week, because he's not relying on it for work.

Each of these failures costs me weeks of productivity. The hourly earnings I lose because of trying to put together a temporary computer, and trying to jumpstart the broken one then reinstalling all the programs, are considerable.

I guess the more reliable a computer is and the longer it lasts, the less wasted is involved.

Good grief. I seem to be arguing myself into one again.

Love my Toshiba Satellite, though it's pretty old now in laptop terms. It's better than the Dells or Compaq I had (do they still even make Compaqs?)

Delivery Tuesday but perhaps I won't be able to get the basics loaded until Wednesday since I need the office technical people to do the first step, and I don't know if they'll be ok with my insisting they come the second the package arrives. So maybe Wednesday morning.

So I amend that to my HP machines break down way too much, but HP service is great. They had estimated that it wouldn't be back for another week.

(Unless of course it doesn't work when it gets home.)

Dinah - Yay Dell computers

We've had great luck with our Dells (DH has one also) & DH says that's what they use at his office .

His opinion is that Dells & Hewlett Packards are probably the best bets these days.

luv, Kath
