On top of the 50 inches of rain we have had in the last 2 months we are now just over an extreme weather event that failed to blow our house down but landed another 10 inches of rain on us.
So there I am keeping our beagle company while the winds howl outside at well over 100km/h. No power, no water, nothing to do but light the candles and check out the pantry and see if those (250g) poppy seeds work after a lemon juice and water extraction, which, I was surprised to find, they did. Like 30mg morphine orally with all this other crap no doubt. Few drinks, half a valium now and then, and hope a tree does not fly through the windows. You need it or you go completely crazy.

What you describe is normal for any coast. On the Oregon Coast we had roofs, fences, and even people, blown away, yet never once did they call it a hurricane.
On the gulf coast it's called a hurricane, in Oregon, high winds. Never mind that the high winds blew tourists clean out of hotel rooms - the national weather service never called it a hurricane. I was in Seaside Oregon when a woman was blown off her motel balcony and it was never called a hurricane.
You can insult my family but don't exaggerate about the weather.

How awful & scarey.
I hope it stops SOON!
Dec, are you saying that if you put 250 g (how much is that in cups?) of poppy seeds into some water & lemon juice (how much) & leave sit for how long? - that it has a medicinal value??
Calming? I wonder if it would be a painkiller?
Were you serious? My daughter with MCS can't safely take pharmaceuticals. perhaps this would help with her migraines?????
If you were serious, would you please give me the details (once this awful storming is over)?
Sounds like you're safe so far - my thoughts are with you.
xoxoxo Kath

They didn't call it a hurricane/cyclone either. But when the power came back on it fused most of the appliances in the house, so I'm writing this from downtown.

I quite like the idea of a monsoon season.
It makes me think of the British Raj with servants and silver and nice drinks in the afternoon.

I call them "nice" because they did eventually stop
