My favourite poet
Mary Oliver
Lilies
I have been thinking
about living
like the lilies
that blow in the fields. They rise and fall
in the edge of the wind,
and have no shelter
from the tongues of the cattle, and have no closets or cupboards,
and have no legs.
Still I would like to be
as wonderfulas the old idea.
But if I were a lily
I think I would wait all day
for the green faceof the hummingbird
to touch me.
What I mean is,
could I forget myselfeven in those feathery fields?
When Van Gogh
preached to the poor
of coarse he wanted to save someone--most of all himself.
He wasn't a lily,
and wandering through the bright fields
only gave him more ideasit would take his life to solve.
I think I will always be lonely
in this world, where the cattle
graze like a black and white river--
where the vanishing lilies
melt, without protest, on their tongues--
where the hummingbird, whenever there is a fuss,
just rises and floats away.

Happy Easter to you, too.
:-)
It actually slipped my mind. I come from a Jewish household, so the absence of planning for a celebratory meal would not remind me of the passage of this important holiday. I have often attended church on Easter Sunday with various people. I went last year. I very much like the messages portrayed by both Passover and Easter remembrances. So, I would also like to wish everyone a happy and meaningful holiday. And if neither holiday applies to you, please have a wonderful day.

Happy Easter to you as well! And to all of my Jewish friends--Happy Passover." As a kid, Easter was the time of year that us kids always got new Sunday clothes. I asked my son last night what Easter represented----he said,"The Easter bunny!" Where did I go wrong? I suppose that Christ vs candy can be a real dilemma for an 8 yr old. The church we go to had the Lord's Supper for the 3rd Sunday in a row. Perhaps they figure--that in hard times---folks will come just for the food and drinks.

happy easter, it's a challenge to type because i have a cat on my lap. i love mary oliver, too. i posted wild geese here recently. here it is again.
Wild Geese
You do not have to be good.
You do not have to walk on your knees
for a hundred miles through the desert, repenting.
You only have to let the soft animal of your body
love what it loves.
Tell me about despair, yours, and I will tell you mine.
Meanwhile the world goes on.
Meanwhile the sun and the clear pebbles of the rain
are moving across the landscapes,
over the prairies and the deep trees,
the mountains and the rivers.
Meanwhile the wild geese, high in the clean blue air,
are heading home again.
Whoever you are, no matter how lonely,
the world offers itself to your imagination,
calls to you like the wild geese, harsh and exciting--
over and over announcing your place
in the family of things.Mary Oliver

Another Reason Why I Don't Keep A Gun In The House
The neighbors' dog will not stop barking.
He is barking the same high, rhythmic bark
that he barks every time they leave the house.
They must switch him on on their way out.The neighbors' dog will not stop barking.
I close all the windows in the house
and put on a Beethoven symphony full blast
but I can still hear him muffled under the music,
barking, barking, barking, and now I can see him sitting in the orchestra,
his head raised confidently as if Beethoven
had included a part for barking dog. When the record finally ends he is still barking,
sitting there in the oboe section barking,
his eyes fixed on the conductor who is
entreating him with his batonwhile the other musicians listen in respectful
silence to the famous barking dog solo,
that endless coda that first established
Beethoven as an innovative genius.Billy Collins

I'm glad you have Mary Oliver in your head. Of all the things to have in your head, that's one of the better things :-)

Isn't it? The poem about sleeping in the forest is really my favourite. It reminds me of the nights that I spent camped out in New Mexico and Colorado. Just myself and my dogs with the little creatures that scurried around the tent.
