Hangnails

Posted by Deneb on January 31, 2009, at 15:31:26

Anyone get them?

How do you prevent them?

I got a hangnail and I tried to rip it off, but it wouldn't come off. Then at home I used nail clippers to clip it off. Now I think it's infected. It's all red and swollen and hurts when I put pressure on it. It's annoying.

Anyone have any tips for hangnails?

It is unlikely it is infected. When did you clip it off?

It sounds like your finger is inflamed. Try some antibiotic cream. Don't try to tear the next one off. Get someone to cut it off with small nail scissors.
Good luck.

It seems better today, less red, doesn't hurt as much. It's all good. I read that moisturizing the cuticles is important. I need to moisturize more.

Yeah - the cuticles can get dryer in the winter. My Mom used to tell me to push the cuticles up towards my finger after I dried my hands. I guess the point was to not have them stick to the nail & crack at the edges as the nail grew out.

My Mom would say to push them back so that I could see the 'moons' on my fingernails!

hugs, Kath
