I was first introduced to Mr. Cohen when I heard Tom Cochrane cover "Bird on A Wire" live many years ago. I loved that song so much, I had to seek out the original.
The original is still the sweetest, of course. I honestly cannot believe that this guy has dodged hundreds of consistent #1 hits. But, he is like those good 'artistes', who put the art form and substance over commercial style. (Even though their style is pretty damn amazing!) I was also recently reading an article where Peter Gabriel was citing Leonard as one of the biggest influences in his life. It's amazing the change over the years in Leonard's voice, but it still has *that signature* to it. I haven't heard that "American Idol" (or whatever contest it was) winner's commercial attempt at Hallelujah, but my thoughts on it: pathetic. It's ART, not a f*ck*ng game show!..lol.
They don't make kinds like him anymore...and that is so sad. Depressing to think about, actually.
Jay :)

You know I saw the "IDOL" hallelujia, and thought at least it's not as overwrought as many of the more well known singers who've covered it.
Even KD Lang, and she's got an amazing voice,
and I love a lot of a her work, but she
"Celine Dioned" it. like the song was just a vehicle for her voice..You can do that with Patsy Cline.
Not with songs like Hallelujia,Jeff Buckley.. it's his song.
It's funny you mention the change in his voice
I was downloading Suzanne, because the lyrics near the end make me shiver.I'd start listening to it and
think damn that's that guy again it's NOT leonard cohen (I was.. not buying the song, so you know I thought someone had mislabeled it)
I did this about 4 times..
Finally I watched it on You Tube and realized
that it was him, and his voice has changed
so much for the better I think. Very mellow and smoke enhanced. Some people can see the underbelly, and write, or sing about it, and leave you hanging with that
open wound. That's not bad, that's what music is for,
Somehow Cohen is more aware, just as cynical, but
there's a comfort or optimism with it.I don't know.. he just never stops putting me in awe, like Shakespeare how can one person just KNOW everything about human nature..
And I feel fortunate that I am living in the same time as he is.
And apparently he's a really really nice guy too..

That is how his music has felt to me.
A (melancholy) kind of comfort.
I was surprised when some people found him depressing. He always gave me a feeling of light.

I saw an interview last year and he spoke of about his manager, who defrauded him out of his entire retirement fund. (litigation is ongoing) He talked of being in his 70s and taking to the road again. I felt really badly for him.
(Thank God that he is so "bankable")He just might be my favourite singer of all time. He is more than a singer. I can't define what he brings me. Whatever it is, I am grateful.
Phillipa, here are links to a few of my favourite songs. No one turns a phrase like LC.
"In My Secret Life" is the first one.

That's certainly the best version of Hallelujah for me.
So Jeff Buckley drowned in the Mississippi?
Everyone had his father's album in their collections in the 70s.
What was it called?
"Greetings from LA" and he was wearing a gas mask?

I didn't even know who Jeff Buckley was until I heard "Hallejuah". I knew the song from LC and was surprised that I had missed hearing JB.I like LC's version best. I like that cheesy video. :-)

I think some Leonard fans may also like the art of the amazing Canuck folk singer/songwriter Bruce Cockburn. I've got my own mp3 listening page...come and check out Bruce at http://www.4shared.com/file/80176209/a450a563/Bruce_Cockburn_-_Pacing_The_Cage.html Yes, depressing, but sooooo soulful, reflective, and so deep into the heart. (Oh ya...I got a paid subscription at Napster. (It's a legal service now..lol.) I downloaded the entire Leonard Cohen catalouge..and will take requests!)

Phillipa, you might listen to Bruce Cockburn also. He was such a force back in the 80s. And still is. However, he peaked during the first half of my second marriage. :-) He has worked with many musicians in the US> Pat

Hey Jay, I've got a request for a Bruce Cockburn song.
I can't find it on youtube.
Can you find "The Rose Above The Sky"?Here are the lyrics
The Rose Above The SkySomething jewelled slips away
Round the next bend with a splash
Laughing at the hands I hold out
Only air within their grasp
All you can do is praise the razor
For the fineness of the slash'Til the Rose above the sky
Opens
And the light behind the sun
Takes allGutless arrogance and rage
Burn apart the best of tries
You carry the weight of inherited sorrow
From your first day till you die
Toward that hilltop where the road
Forever becomes one with the sky'Til the Rose above the sky
Opens
And the light behind the sun
Takes allOzone on the midnight wind
Got me thinking of the sea
And the mercies of the currents that brought
Me to you and you to me
And in the silence at the heart of things
Where all true meetings come to be'Til the Rose above the sky
Opens
And the light behind the sun
Takes all

>My friend, I am unfortunately at work right now and can't do it, but will do so when I get home tomorrow morning. Yes, the words are just gorgeous, and Bruce really is a "Poet's Poet". The songs I put up, you are free to download as well! It says so right on the webpage. Nothing illegal. I paid for these songs. I'll post when the song is up. Thanks...Jay :)
