I only have two email pals: sister and daughter. (and my daughter rarely responds and that's in shorthand) Come to think of it, my sister hasn't emailed me in months, so perhaps I have no online relationships.
I've often questioned the authenticity of online contact and complained about my real-life isolation. I've been deliberately provocative and even irritating with my posts. I apologize to Diana and Gardengirl (and any others) for being downright mean.
I have a hard time getting *down* with the social online experience. I'm not cold - anything but. I just have a deep, abiding, doubt about language. I don't trust it.
Language can't be tamed, *broken* like a bronco, so online communication is a little wild and even scary. There's nothing precise about it. Perhaps, all these emoticons and cyberhugs are better.

I think you're right, verne, it's difficult to socialize online when all you've got are words. It's hard to know whether someone is being serious or joking, sincere or sarcastic, etc.
Thanks for your apology. It actually means a great deal to me. And your post helps me to understand how my words might at times have been upsetting to you. I'm sorry for that.
It's good to see you back.

Verne, you're just tetchy, and if you can't socialise well online, you are very welcome to join me, and we can socialise badly together.

I have not held up my end of emailing with you, Verne. I tend to hide when I'm having a tough time.
But I consider our friendship quite valuable, if a bit untended at the moment.

thanks all for responses, emails, and babblemail.
I'm really struggling with depression, now dwarfed by what happened on the Virginia Tech Campus.
Having been in the military and fired umpteen different types of weapons, I think gun control: banning handguns, automatic weapons, clips, and even ammo are reasonable public safety measures. Homeowners would still have rifles and shotguns to shoot people with. Texas now allows gunlovers to shoot people for little or no reason.
If our government can't restrict access to weapons without violating the constitution, why are mortars, grenades, bazookas, stinger missiles, anti-tank missiles, and a vast assortment of exotic weaponary, banned? Doesn't that violate the gunlover's rights too?
Just add handguns, automatic weapons, and ammo clips to name a few to the banned list. And close all the loopholes.
