It's all over the news. Terrible. I can't imagine how confusing, terrifying, and horrible it must have been.

GG that's horrible. We watch the weather channel. Was this in VA Beach? Seems the name rings a bell as I lived there for five years. My favorite state. My condolences to the family and friends. Love Phillipa

I KNOW! I can't believe it. The shootings at Dawson College last semester (in Montreal) were horrible. I was at a diff uni there, but everyone was looking over their shoulder all the time, and then profs tried to brace discussions, and it just made everyone more anxious and tense. And we were at a different uni! I can't even imagine how the students and faculty are going to face going to back to the uni after such a tragedy!!!!

When I went to school yesterday , a lot of kids were not there and I don't live anywhere near that. It was kinda weird because I thought about what I would do if that happened while I was in school.
I need to stop watching the news, it is too upsetting and bringing me down. I try not to watch normally but especially now. (((((everyone))))

I was thinking about it too Happy. If it happened here, there would be no way for the students to escape... it's a scarey thought, but for the amout of ppl out there, it doesn't happen *all* that much... tho once is way too much...

I get so angry at the media coverage. From the first report they're calling it "Largest shooting in American history". Putting it that way seems like it's just inviting somebody to try and top it. And I'm just angry that the shooter gets such instant fame and attention. He gets more coverage than the victims. No wonder it keeps happening over and over.

The bloke who did the Port Arthur massacre (10 years ago, now) was a child, in some respects.
I read the Police transcript of interview. He told them things like 'I suppose I'm in trouble now' and 'no one cares that I got burned'.
But when he shot the little children through the head he said 'no one gets away from me'.

The one good thing about it for us was that we (only just) got gun control done as a consequence.

They said that April will be the month most likely to have shootings of this kind in it because of Collumbine, and Taber copycats. And well, now VT, I guess will be added to this list. It's all just so sad

Oh wow, that's so close to home. I'm so sorry. I imagine you can never quite look at VT again in the same way.

Take care of yourself. If you're not already, take breaks from media coverage.

I agree. Dissected into the tiniest of parts and then repeated and repeated and repeated.

I was telling my husband last night that I am having a problem with the word "massacre". I know it's an appropriate use of the word, but it just doesn't feel right to me. It feels a bit like it sensationalizes it somehow. Or it's that I think of a massacre as being carried out in some sort of organized, sanctioned by some group as in a military or some type of group kind of thing. It's really hard to put my finger on just why I don't like that term used here. But it seems like an ugly word, regardless.
