My favorite winter fruit is the lovely pomegranate.
Many believe that this fruit was actually the "apple" in Eve's hand.
Historically associated with fertility, although I remember hearing that a mixture of seeds and such was an ancient remedy for that affliction of unwanted pregnancy.
Here's how to enjoy your pomegranate
select one that has a bright color (not brown) and firm flesh- no mushy spots. Pick one that seems heavy. These will have the juiciest, ripest seeds.
To open your treasure chest of garnets, a trick I learned from a Portuguese friend:
thin slice off the top and bottom (i.e. cut the stem off) Now score the skin (cut into it a bit, but not too muc) along the prime meridian and the international dateline of the pomegranate (in quarters, or every 6 time zones or something like that. Now place your knife in one of the lines that creates the criss cross at the north pole (the stem end) and give it a little twist- like you're splitting a melon or something. you can twist clockwise or counter clockwise, depending on your mood and your cerebral laterality. As a right handed anxious depressive, I find best results if I twist clock-wise.
Now the pomegranate is in two parts and little garnets are spilling every where! Use the other score-lines to separate it into quarters.
Then flick the little garnets out using your fingers and either eat them immediately (sharing NOT allowed- get you OWN pomegranate, buddy) or play a mean trick and save the "seeds" for yourself and give the violently bitter pithy bits to your significant other- here sweety- here's the fruit, I took out the seeds for you and everything!
Pomegranate punch- a non alcoholic treat for festivities.
equal parts pomegranate juice and some other juice (I used minute maid berry punch)
low cal = pomegranate and seltzer or diet ginger ale, diet 7 up etc.
then add a few squeezes of lime or lemon juice, even orange juice.
My fancy party version has diced strawberries and a whole pomegranate's worth of seeds. That's a labor of LOVE, folks!
you can save some seeds and put them on the side next to lime slices and orange twists at your next cocktail party. people will think you're so fancy.
'cause you are.
goes well with everything from geodon to cheezepuffs to dried squid to goat cheese and scandanavian smoked salmon crepes.
yeah.

Pomegranates always seem like so much work to eat! Since I'm a reading-and-nibbling kind of person, I tend to go for single handed fruits; book in one hand and food in t'other. Even bananas are a problem for a lazy bum like me - you have to peel as you eat or risk getting banana mush all over your fingers!
My favourite fruits: raspberries, blueberries, MacIntosh apples off the tree, watermelon cut into cubes.

One took her away. Then two came back and an ambulance and fire truck. Wheeled the Mother out she's not well seriously and going on in years. The Daughter treats her Mom bad and brings home homeless guys as boyfriends and this is a good neighborhood. So some are worse off than us I guess that's what I wanted to say. Gee I don't want to think the awful thought of what could happed to that sweet woman who puts up with her Daughter and her homeless boyfriends. Love Phillipa ps cold out

are supposed to reverse artherosclerosis and slow down the progression of prostate cancer, so you can die before it kills you.
Then you can say to your prostate cancer 'You lose, you lose'.Nice to see you, Lurps.

Don't worry, I totally understand the med thing. I'm going through it too. It does suck.
What do you think of Pomwonderful? Or of P*m-rasberry juice? I didn't so much like the p*m-bluberry. It was just too much. But the pomegranet pop isn't too bad.
Be careful not to stain your clothes as you pick out the little seeds!

they stained my fingers, prying all those garnets out of their cushioned husks.
and when the fingers are stained they get looked at.
and when *I* look at them. I notice them. little bits of stained flesh.
symbolic of me.
so I try to strip the little bits off. icky icky mess.
sorry. grim. I need to meditate a bit now.

HEY LLLLLL
did anyone ever tell you that you're a good writer?
I loved this post. I will try the Method.
For the punch - Teacher - do we have to squash the little garnets to make the juice splash out for the punch???
hugs, Kath

Hey Kath,
good news- they sell the juice at almost all supermarkets nowadays. just look in the fruits and veggies section where they sell fancy juices.you can mix it with seltzer to make it go further.
