Regretting having done something

Posted by dreamboat_annie on January 31, 2007, at 21:03:31

I approached someone today - someone who has been a good friend for a number of years - about some things that I had been told were being planned for me and another friend when we returned to work (both of us were on extended sick leave). What was apparently being planned was not very professional and not justified. I had kept it inside for months and months, but I needed to have this friend confirm or deny it, particularly since she had approached me about a job and, it appears, may have only done so to do a favour for the new boss of the group I worked with (he started while I was on leave). Well, she neither confirmed nor denied it, and I think I have now alienated her. I don't like feeling like this. Rumours and gossip are running rampant in the office where I work, all started by one person and repeated by others, and the things that are being repeated serve no useful purpose other than to hurt others and cause rifts and animosity. I don't know why people repeat mean things that are said about another person to that person's face?!?!?! I could never go up to someone and say "Guess what so-and-so said about you". Why are people so mean-spirited?!?!? I will never understand people. I give up trying!!

I need a re-wind button to deal with my impulsive behaviour at times. I should have just kept my mouth shut. I will never learn.

Hi Dreamboat,

I hope you can take a deep, deep breath & as you exhale, imagine all the uncomfortable regret feelings flowing out of every cell of your body. Maybe at the same time you could say something like, "I forgive myself...nobody is perfect...I am a good person" things like that.

That type of thing helps me. I know it does't help everyone, but maybe it will help you.

I'm so sorry that the office is like that. I agree - I have no idea how people could repeat things in that way to others!

(((((((((((((((you)))))))))))))

Kath

Sorry to hear of your work troubles, I agree with Kath above, try and forgive yourself. It can seem like no one is to be trusted, but I guess people have their own agendas. Take what happened as a lesson for the future.
Best wishes. Jo
