Which passport should I get?

Posted by Deneb on December 5, 2006, at 1:56:14

I don't know how long it takes to get a passport so I'm thinking about it now. I hope to travel to the U.S. sometime.

I have duel citizenship. I'm an American and Canadian citizen because I was born in the U.S. and also became a Canadian.

So, which passport should I get? I probably don't need both. I'm thinking I should get the Canadian passport because I live in Canada, but I also like the idea of having a U.S. passport, I dunno, 'cause it's cool. LOL

I should probably get the Canadian one eh? I don't want to be stuck in the U.S. because I have no proof except my citizenship card that I'm a Canadian. I just really like the idea of a U.S. passport....(I think I'm secretly still an American LOL)

I dunno. Which should I get? I would really like to have both. :-)

I have no idea. I'd go for Canada because you're in Canada right now, but you should have some kind of proof of american citizenship. But I really don't know anythng about this....

Get both and use the U.S. one going into the states and the Canadian one coming back into Canada.

Yeah get both! I have two, one british and one Finnish. Its very nice. And you never know when you might want to work in America, or something like that, or if you want to claim Canadian welfare..... plus, you never have to worry about losing your passport because you have an extra one!! But I know that some countries don't allow you to have two nationalities.

And also (this is my skewed mother's logic here) if you're on a plane and it gets hijacked, the hijackers are more likely to have an issue with America than they are with Canada.... well my mother's logic was that Finland has never done anything to anyone really, whereas there are alot more people who hold a grudge against the UK....if you see what I mean. Although this is obviously a kinda mental logic.

But to be fair, I have been on a bus crossing the border between Latvia and Estonia the border guards ordered everyone out who wasn't Finnish, Estonian or Latvian and made them buy insurance. It was a complete scam, but hey. I was thankful for my Finnish passport then!

And round Europe there are loads of Canadian backpackers who proudly show off their Canadian flags on their packbacks. Hmmmm, sometimes Americans aren't well received as their Canadian counterparts, I'm afraid to say. And perhaps those backpackers are sick of everyone asking them if they're from America. To the untrained European ear, Canadians sound alot like Americans!!

Kind regards

Meri

I agree both as long as they are at the same place and you don't have to travel to get two. Love Phillipa
