I haven't touched up the color for well over a year. And even by my standards, it's too long and straggly.
It's time to spring for a decent cut. I think I've spent all my cash though, so it might have to wait.
I'm scared. My salon was thoroughly flooded, and they're not up and running yet. I could probably track down my stylist, if she's still in town. But salons scare me. I went to this one for years more because I knew the procedures and how to tip the shampoo woman than because I was happy with it.
I'm not sure I have the nerve to go to a place of fashionable people who are sure to look askance at quirky old fat me. Or say things about my thin hair. Or unrefined features. (Yes, I'm quoting.)

Dinah,
Well, if it makes you feel any better people almost ALWAYS cut one side of my hair an inch longer than the other. Even when I WARN them that people often make that mistake.
And for what it is worth, I have very fine, thin hair, too. I hate the social chit chat that is expected between the stylist and the client.
I usually get mine cut when I start feeling so desperate I might take the scissors to it myself. Just tip 10%-15% to the stylist and a couple of dollars to the shampoo girl.
Good luck!

Good luck Dinah!
I really dislike all aspects of having my hair cut.... not the least of which I have to put a huge wad of cotton wool and vaseline in my ears before leaving home to go to the salon (water is not allowed to enter my ears due to chronic ear infections a while back) So I look like a curiosity to say the least!
From one straggly haired (hair salon "phobic") creature to you,

Oh no you too? Mine has gray roots and needs color so bad. And I don' t want the cut as I've started putting it in a pony tail so I can keep my bangs out of my eyes. I don't have the money and with this hyperthyroid until stabalized I can't sit still. I almost stopped today to make any appointment but I can't guarantee keeping the appointment . Can't guarantee anything. Could we just let it go? Love Phillipa

Just do it! You can do it Dinah!
I'm kinda in the same predicament, but not as bad. I was suppose to get my hair cut last week, but I didn't. I just hate it. I do like the places where you can just walk in, sit down and get your hair cut. No washing. It's cheaper too!

Hi Dinah,
If you can't track down your (flooded out) hairdresser is there anybody you know whose hair you think looks good, cut and color wise, that you'd feel comfortable asking who she goes to?
If you want an economic cut/color you might try a beauty school. The students don't charge much and likely do his/her own shampooing, so you don't have to worry about a double tip.
My hairdresser shampoos my hair herself, so that's one less tip to worry about. I use my cell phone's built in tip calculator to figure out how much to leave. That'll tell you how bad my basic math skills are, but at least my hairdresser gets her 15 percent. I hope that's how much she's supposed to get. Now, I'm worried...

I'd recommend a small casual shop, not some swack place. If you locate such a shop, call and make an appointment with the owner/stylist. She'll have experience.
I won't go to those places where all the stylists display their bellyrings (my apologies to the bellyring crowd)and thongs (similar apology).

I've got a recommendation.
My stylist is a gay guy- ergo no sexual tension. He has a far better sense of style than I do. I am comfortable letting him suggest things. I bring in a picture and he is inspired by it, but doesn't try to make it too literal.
My hair is thin and baby fine. He told me my hair is "great" because it takes about 2 minutes to blow-dry, and it's weightless, so that with the right product, it will hold its shape and volume longer than the medium-haired folks. (note to self- bring more money next time to buy the definition-texturizing putty and superdurable Aveda hairspray next time)
AND here's the best part. he spontaneously told me about his various trials on anti-depressants-- I was trying to explain my lack of hair hygeine "um, I've been really stressed out the last few months, and haven't really been able to keep my hair styled regularly" "oh, that's fine! You're going to see a BIG difference when we're through... you know? it's kind of like this time when I was depressed- and then they put me on wellbutrin, and I was like MaNiC for 2 weeks straight, and I wasn't sleeping at all, and I changed my hair-style and color, like, every 2 days. I was TOTALLY wigging out... etc."
and somehow I gradually learned that his family is perhaps even more dysfunctional than mine. And we cursed. haha, even though the old ladies next to us were talking about their poodles and arthritis, we were talking about the various felonies his brother had committed... haha"
It was like good old times.
And the cut is fabulous. :)

Well, I have the opposite problem. I have such thick hair that I hate it because whenever I go to the salon the stylist inevitably (even if I've seen her before) calls all the other stylists over so they can feel my hair. And despite the fact that I warn them they need to plan an hour instead of a half hour to cut and blow dry my hair, they don't believe me, and then tell me they don't have time and I don't really want my hair dry, do I?
Good luck with making an appointment. I know it can be hard.

In fact, even my therapist thought it was a perfectly valid anxiety.
Of course, now my mood has dipped again and it feels like I don't merit a haircut or the time and expense.
(Li, I love the sound of your stylist. One like that would be terrific.)

What in particular are you interested in, Jay?
If you give me an idea, for example, of what your treatment plan is, I'd have a better idea of what you're looking for.
This is the end of the thread.
