Hazardous road conditions on Memory Lane...

Posted by Racer on September 5, 2006, at 18:07:01

I don't know exactly what triggered this -- maybe the discussion of Syd Barrett? -- but I did a quick search on someone I used to know, who died years back, and came across a site which told Where They Are Now for a lot of people from my past. Some, it was good to see mentioned -- my very dear friend who is apparently now married and living somewhere around here still; another who has become a physical therapist; some caused more than a little jealousy -- Hollywood costume designer? I'm turning green; but so many had died! That was kinda hard to take.

Some I could find causes for -- some the causes were listed, such as AIDS, cancer, one was shot to death by the police. Others, though -- nothing. Nothing via google. Two were men I'd had such crushes on! That was hard, especially since they weren't much older than I. I know it could have been anything, but it's hard not to think it was something stupid -- drugs, my guess.

It's a mixed feeling -- melancholy, but not depressing, maybe? It was kinda nice to remember "back in the day..." But it was so damned sad to see some of those names...

Some names were famous -- Snakefinger is on the list, one of the loveliest men I've ever known. Jane Dornacker, how could we keep driving without her traffic reports? Buck Naked, shot to death by a crazy homeless man while walking his dog after work.

Most weren't.

{sigh} Wherever you are, Tracey -- I don't think I've seen anyone sexier than you were, not in the 25 years that I've lived since then. And Ben? Well, you know... And thanks for rescuing me that time.

Ah, bittersweet but your post warmed my heart with bittersweet memories of my own and yes, as time goes on, there is much sadness and also much joy...

It's not worth it at all to "go back"...or try to. I am not saying you where, but you are a whole different person now. And, certainly don't compare yourself to others...I know it is hard not to...but your mission, purpose, etc, is just a different path then others, and I am positive many of your qualities, if viewed through other's eyes, may make them "envious" of you. Sometimes the hardest paths up the mountain can afford you the best views. It's not pop-psychology....it's a deeply embedded value in my ever-changing experience with depression.

Best, and take-care...don't look back..
Jay
