Emergency Preparedness? Me? *worry trigger*

Posted by corafree on July 24, 2006, at 20:07:59

Yesterday, my fam' and I began to discuss where we would meet if there were a catastrophic emergency. With my 'my drama and adrenalin rush in a crisis' and 'their practicality', we could create 'a plan'.

Think 'where to meet' depends on nature of emergency. Think 'an emergency kit' and 'list of things to grab' would be pretty much the same if you needed to leave your home.

I bought one of those wind-up AM/FM radios w/ push button Nat'l Weather Band and TV audio, but these checklists say to get a battery-operated radio and batteries.(?)

I found the following three sites offer preparedness plans.

OMG ... we couldn't compunnicate ... maybe no internet access. :[

The following three sites are FEMA, Red Cross, and Homeland Security.

I've found FEMA, Red Cross, and Homeland Security. Who would you trust?

http://www.fema.gov/areyouready/emergency_planning.shtm

http://www.redcross.org/services/disaster/foreignmat/epceng.pdf

http://www.ready.gov/america/index.html

Thoughts? Suggestions? Knowledge of which of the above organizations to count on?

"I could as easily get hit by a bus today as blah blah blah", doesn't strike me as funny tonight.

I thought maybe talking about it together would be good. I'm sorry. I totally understand if people don't even want to think about it.

bestwishes, cf

I have a wind up radio, flashlights, batteries, canned food and water. Try to keep my meds filled, don't let the gas tank get below 1/2 full.

Get insurance if you need it. Federal flood, etc. Keep some extra cash at home and get important papers, pictures to take with you. Try to plan to evacuate to a smaller town and go on secondary roads to avoid some of the crowds. Be sure you have MAPS! LOL

Your purchase is obviously a wise one... you can wind it up as long as you're OK, but once you're out of batteries the other one is no good. Don't second-guess yourself!

Of course, FEMA is under Homeland Security so it's essentially the same folks (though I wonder whether their advice is consistent).

> "I could as easily get hit by a bus today as blah blah blah", doesn't strike me as funny tonight.

Certainly there's a healthy balance to strike between that attitude and taking simple measures to protect yourself and your family. Still, I really think there's far too much free-floating fear being whipped up.

When you are ready for a chuckle I liked this Daily Show segment, "Are You Prepared?" http://youtube.com/watch?v=S1EnhLsJFNw&search=

(Prepared for what? "If I had a nickel for every rube who asked me that question...")

My bags are packed. I'm ready to go.

Photos, papers that need to be scanned into the computer. Family videotapes.

I'm determined this time I won't leave anything behind that I really couldn't live without.

The dogs have their shots. The records are in one place.

I do need to load some software on my laptop and make sure my backups are current.

I'm trying to convince my husband to board the windows now, and keep them boarded thru October.

We know where we're going - for this year at least.

My mother left her moldy house and is safely up north, at least for a while.

I'm asking for contact info from everyone.

Re: The link to the site, I'll take any chuckle I can, to 'pass' the time today, 'butt' ...

I tried it and I hear about five words and then silence for at least a minute, and then another five words and on and on? Is it downloading too slow? Why? Can I fix it!?

Computer savvy peeps .. help plz?

Geez! I'm so needy I just wanna' push myself off myself!

I'm sorry... the bit features a rude TV reporter grilling random people in their homes about their "preparedness," telling them how inadequately prepared they are for some never-specified threat that's sure to kill them. It was on The Daily Show, in case you're familiar with that...

I thought it would be funny. I need a laugh. My computer is acting up so I couldn't get to watch it. My son can maybe help me access it. I want to see it.
