Moving out on the cheap

Posted by javableue on May 24, 2006, at 11:33:39

I decided to go to a university some two hours away from where I live now, but I did so too late to get a place in the dorms... so apartment life is apparently in my future. (Well, my own apartment life, anyway, seeing as I already live in one.)

Most of the apartments I've seen so far in my price range provide a fridge and stove, so that's probably not a concern. Everything else, on the other hand... yikes. I'll be amazed if I don't forget a million things which I later can't afford.

I need to do this, but that doesn't change the fact that I'm in way over my head.

Get to know your family's garages. They are a great source for apartment living stuff.
Look at the curbside for things like chairs, desks, tables. Remember a glue gun and a coat of paint can do wonders.
Bricks and 2 x 4's. The classic bookcase.

If desperate, the Sally Ann is a good source for whatever you need.

Hm... replace "family" with "church" and you may have just furnished my apartment. ;)

:-) Whatever works!! We have a corner of the garage where my husband puts the things that we can't use any longer, but are fine otherwise. I think of it as the last resting place before our stuff gets to Goodwill.

My step-kids are petrified of it. "Don't let Dad take you to the corner!!! Ahhhh!!" No one can escape our home without taking something from that pile.

I love seeing my stuff being utilized and maybe enjoyed by others. Life did not end with ClearSkies!!

Fair warning to anyone who visits me....

Don't know if there's a group near you. I guess look on the internet.

It's basically a wonderful waste-not-want-not thing also.

I've known people to get fridges, stoves, plants for their gardens, vitamin pills - you name it!

Good luck!!

Kath

PS - you can post what you have to give away and/or what you'd like to receive!

Good luck on the moving! It sounds exciting. The others gave you some good advice on how to do it cheaply.

Thanks for mentioning that; what a great concept! There is in fact a group in my city, so I'll have to keep an eye on that in coming months.

A local thrift store is having a half-off sale soon. I'm cursing the timing, though; way too early to be picking up any furniture as there's no place to store it. Should be worth the look, though.
