Is it when you have so much anxiety that you cannot function?
I am just wondering if I ever had one.
I was hospitalized for the weekend once because I could not stop crying due to anxiety.
The other time, I missed a week of work.

It's a old old term. I would define it as when an emotional/mental health state places one in a state of being unable to function or cope. I guess it is true just taking the phrase apart - my nervous system certainly has felt broken to me at times.
