This is in the nature of an obsession for me right now -- pity poor GG, who's gotten more than enough about this lately in her email inbox -- but I just have to express it. I *want* to buy yarn. I want to buy a good deal of yarn. I want to buy a lot of yarn that I've looked at and drooled over online for a long time. I want it, and I want new knitting needles. I want two circular knitting needles in each size, from a company that makes the Porsche of knitting needles. And I want a special circular knitting needle case to put them in.
Of course I want them all now.
Sure, there's a bit of a reason for some of it -- I have a coupon for free shipping that expires on 17 March. And that would be nice. Plus, if I spend more than $120, I get a 25% discount. If I spend $60, I only get 20% off. So it makes sense to spend a lot right now, right?
I haven't, though. Yet.
I did order a few needles, though. Four of them. And they really are expensive. But they are better than the others.
Really, it's an obsessive thing, and I need more yarn like I need -- more yarn. I've got more yarn than I could knit in a year -- as proven by the fact that most of it has been around longer than a year, and it's still not knit up...
Anyway, I just had to get that out. And I figured y'all should know about it.

I think you have a great hobby. :-) It sounds fun to be so excited about yarn. ;-)
I only know how to knit scarves. LOL I think it would be fun to buy lots of yarn.
I hope you have tons of fun with the yarn and needle buying!

I say go for the yarn. Sewing is a form of expression, and you need to have lots of yarn around so that you can express yourself as the spirit moves. (You should see my floss.)
Now mind you though, I'm a spendthrift in debt.

>LOL! I got that, too -- not to mention the six trunks full of fabric, which is overflowing under the guest room bed... And fuzz -- fiber for spinning. And other things, which we won't get into. Let's just say that I could entertain myself for life on a desert island...
> Now mind you though, I'm a spendthrift in debt.
I could be, too, if I actually bought the stuff I shop for...
But, I went to Stitches West with my mother, and spent my Yarn Budget last week. So, I'm trying ot be good. And, since I just realized I need to rip out and start over the cardigan I just started the other night, I guess I will entertain myself with my new stash a while longer... {sigh} Someday, my gauge swatches will become more consistent with my actual knitting...
(In my defense, I knit in the round, so a flat gauge swatch doesn't do much good...)
OK. Glad y'all understand. Gotta go now. Got yarn to knit, and a new marriage counselor to try out...

I think you know a whole lot more about yarn than I do. I tried knitting, but I found it rather frustrating and slow. I'm not good with things that take time or concentration. Can you knit without watching your hands. I'm totally amazed by those people.

In the past few weeks, I decided that I don't knit enough to have all of that yarn around. If I was filling trash bags with it, it was probably about 20 galons of Gold yarn, 10 gallons of left-over stuff, and a shpping bag full of tapestry yarn. I also gave away all of my knitting needles.
Still needing to get rid of stuff, my daughter is now into sewing, so she got my machine, and a box full of fabric, and my baskets full of sewing stuff -- thread, bobbins, shears, etc.
BUT---- I'm not doing cross stitch anymore either. I had some floss around from projects past. Out it went. Then I found a friend who is heavy into cross-stitch, so she got everything else. More fabric, some floss, and books, hoops, etc.
Ok... hafta call it quits soon... while I still have stuff around.

I bought a beginner's knitting kit. I've had too much other crap going on to get started yet. I still have my computer desk in pieces on the floor waiting to be put together. And now of course I have all the boxes from my Grandmother's in my living room as well. I feel like knitting will be something I will enjoy once I finally get started. But like everything else in my life, I have a hard time getting started on new things, even when its something good.
I think it sounds like you've got a handle on your yarn obsession, what with the yarn buget and all. I think a harmless obsession is better than a harmful one anyday.
Gotta go now, time for Lost! Its a new one tonight!

I have a "thing" for yarn as well, but I'm REALLY not much of a knitter or crocheter.
I just love the textures, the colors, even the smell of yarn. I have an image of you trying to dive into a very large pile of yarn, and throwing it around giggling...I hope it doesn't come to that ;-)
I have a real issue with buying arts and crafts supplies in general...it's a hard habit to break (but, but, but I'll use them, I'll have them on hand when I need them!! -says the little voice that makes me buy stuff)

I find knitting very therapeutic, soothing keeping the hands busy, you know?
Hey, I think the idea of knitting groups are great, do you have anything like that near you? I need to form a club I think....
Racer's got me thinking
