Alphabetizing

Posted by James K on January 30, 2006, at 16:15:09

How do ya'll alphabetize and organize your books and records?

I'm strict alpha. I ignore genre and go by author's last name. Reference books - music guides, music essays, pro wrestling, movies, fish, get their own section at the end. Series with more than one author get a space at the end before after anthologies but before reference. Doctor Who has his own shelf. I start at the front door, work around the living room and dining room and finish in my bedroom.

Records have their own wall. Again alpha regardless of style. split releases next, then comps., I waver on should tribute albums go before comps., or last. Actually soundtracks are last. CDs, 7 inchers, and 10 inchers have same system. I have boxes for cds that come without jewel boxes.

Magazines are in boxes, but I'm working on exactly what system I want to keep them in. When I write the encyclopedia of everything that is cool in the world according to me, I have to be able to find everything.

I keep working on a card file catalog system, but get bogged down.

I've tried organizing things by label or publisher to see if it created an interesting visual effect, but I then have to spend days putting it back together.

Any body else this anal, or collect so much stuff?

I keep it so clean and organized, or else I would be a pack rat. I also have high standards on what deserves to stay. I'm running out of room in my half of the house.

Thank you for attention regarding this matter,
James K. II

All books by the same suthor go together. When I finish a magazine I throw it out or leave in a doctor's office for someone else to read. Fondly, Phillipa

I'm anything but neat, but I like to keep my library organized so I can find everything.

I also like to keep all my books, cd's, albums (yes, I'm that old), videotapes, and DVD's on a database. I've just started adding date and a brief description to the basic titles. I organize them by genre or topic. Of course, all authors or artists grouped together, even if I have to stretch the topic definitions. :)

My husband can never figure out the system, so I'm thinking of labeling the bookshelves and crossreferencing them to the books, and putting a bookshelf map in the library.

He also has to give all new purchases to me for entering into the database before putting them on the shelves.

Actually, I had to switch from my old Q&A database because it no longer works, so I'm behind on the books. :( I've got a big stack of the printout from the old database to re-enter.

hmm. i go by topic and size.
some of the bigger textbooks have to go on a particular shelf because that is the only shelf they fit on.
but I prefer to organise by topic.
and i like to have a quick reference section too

:-)

I pile papers by general subject, a system that only I seem to understand. Music that I like goes in one box, those I can do without go in another. Books just get stuffed in the free spaces in the bookshelf in two piles, those I've read and those I think I might get to read someday.

Hey alexandra-k, good to hear from you. I have to make shelf size considerations too. I collect paperback originals along with hardback first editions, then oversized reference books and some shelves just won't do what I need. I know you've been busy elsewhere, and saw you on med board but didn't have anything to contribute. But glad you're around.

Dinah, I didn't expect someone would be more organized than me. That is a facinating system. Does it drive your hubby mad? I haven't had a computer at home before, so I do everything on notecards and spirals. I'm still running broadband on windows 98 laptop, so everything is pared down for optimal surfing, but when I get a real computer, I'll go whole hog with it.

I started this thread at phillipa's request, but I've been wanting to talk about it for a while. Nobody can really know me until they are aware of the sheer quanity of stuff I accumulate and study.

The dumpster diver? I didn't think anyone saw me... Seriously, I furnished my apartment with things thrown in the university dumpster at the end of spring quarter. But actually I was simply describing my living space, piles of stuff all over in a haphazard manner. My roomie hates it, but what can he do, it's all in my room!!!

I can walk through my room in the dark and never touch the piles of cds and magazines in various stages of use and misuse without mishap. That's a skill born of growing up in a 9' by 11' bedroom. (by the way me and my wife have our own spaces). My cats will never touch a 23 year old Trouser Press rock mag on my floor, but will shred last weeks Newsweek on the kitchen table. They understand me.

Hehe, sounds like me. My roomie always trips out because I can walk around my room and the apartment with all the lights off without tripping over anything. "How can you do that?" is always the incredulous question. I say the truth, I am part cat!

Was it you that I read was a decorator? I hope you don't want 20 pound design books organized by color scheme and size.

Plus, I think you might live in my city, so when we know each other better, I'll come organize you.

It will take as long as I can last. I'm no spring chicken.

Southern Girls, sheesh

Here's what I'd really love:

1. All my fabrics out where I can see them and pet them lovingly.
2. All my books where I can see them, arranged aesthetically, grouped by subject matter, throughout the house.
3. All of the 'good ideas' I've pulled out of magazines and catalogs arranged into notebooks.
4. Every remnant of Barbie removed and destroyed.
5. All of my unfinished projects completed.
6. The ability to park INSIDE the garage.

I'll probably need to go ahead and adopt you to keep you as long as it could take...

I'm in southern IL; not exactly southern but some standards, but northerners tell me I have that twang! ;~}

You're the decorator - I'm the one in his city.

I shudder to think what would happen if we merged into one person. The world isn't ready.
