Considering vet visit for Hammie

Posted by Deneb on October 1, 2005, at 13:23:52

There is something wrong with Hammie's eyes. They are partially closed and swollen. Hammie is getting really old. He's 2 years 6 months old now. Syrian hamsters have a life span of about 2 years to 3 years.

I'm considering a vet visit for Hammie. I don't have a car so I will have to find some way of transporting Hammie on a bus. I don't want to stress him out.

The first place I called didn't see hamsters, now I think I have to travel a bit on the bus. Hammie's eyes have been closed for about a week now. He seems to be doing well otherwise.

I'm worried about Hammie. :-(

Hi Denub,

Poor Hammie. And poor you. I hope you find a way to take him to the vet. Maybe it's just an eye infection and some meds will clear it up.

Have you found a place which will see Hammie? Maybe they can advise you on how to transport him, if so. Or maybe a search online will help. The only thing I can think of, not having experience with small animals, would be to cover the cage/carrier lightly with dark fabric so as to reduce the stress caused by seeing the motion of the bus and strange surroundings/people.

((Hammie))
I hope you can find a way to take him to the vet. It sucks when animals get sick. :-(

at least i think its pretty yukky...

are his eyes leaking pus?
he might have conjunctivitus.
are his eyes swollen shut or glued together?

if it is conjunctivitus then you should get some kind of cream to put on them.
its pretty catchy so you have to be careful not to spread it from one eye to the other (though I think that typically people / pets get it in both eyes).
I'm not sure whether people can get the pet variety and vice versa or not.

might be time to take him to the vet...
or at the very least...
ring the vet and speak to someone about what it might be...

I'm not sure what you mean jyl. Why would I have trouble with that?

I'm not saying that Hammie's illness is going to make me OD, but the stress of knowing that Hammie will die soon and the stress of tests coming up are not helping me with the OD thing.

((((((jyl))))))) I'm sorry about what happened to Ratty. It will be difficult for me when Hammie passes. I've never had anything die before and I don't know how I'm going to handle it.

I recognize that I need some help with my urges to OD. Since these urges are gaining strength because of recent stressors, I've decided to go see a doc tomorrow. I'll also see my p-doc on Weds. I think my new meds are making my apathetic and is contributing to my lack of motivation.

Thanks for caring jyl

I'm in Ottawa.

This post makes me cry...
I cannot imagine how horrible that must have been for you and patty.
I hope Hammie will pass on in his sleep...in his comfortable nest and home.
Oh, I can't stand this, this is too sad, I'm starting to cry some more.

Hey~i am sorry to hear about Hammie but it does sound like *pink eye* to make it simple. I know in the US, there are now drops available OTC and if u have them there, they may help. Also take a warm wash cloth and wipe Hammie's eyes so he feels better. A vet will upset Hammie, cost you a fortune and few care for hamsters. It is VERY contagious so do be careful. I just went through this w/ newborn kittens from a stray cat. I had a hamster when i was younger, Herbie, and i loved him so much so i know how u feel. Herbie wld. sleep w/ me on my pillow and slide down his chute into his play cage every morning. When he was 3, he passed away but i know he had a good life and got through it. People get as attached to animals as they do a person and death can be hard but hopefully it is just *pink eye* and Hammie will be better. Hang in there.

I posted my concerns about Hammie on this hamster newsgroup and someone told me to us a cotton swab and contact lens solution to very gently swab his eyes. I didn't have to do that, his eyes are better now. :-)

I'm starting to think it was some kind of eye infection. This is the second time this has happened. Last time his eyes were closed for only 2 or 3 days.

>Also take a warm wash cloth and wipe Hammie's eyes so he feels better.

I did the warm wash cloth thing. I hope it helped him a little.

>A vet will upset Hammie, cost you a fortune and few care for hamsters.

I haven't found a vet who treats hamsters yet. I don't know how much it costs, but I'd feel horrible if I let Hammie suffer just because I wasn't willing to shell out some dough. I agree that the vet would upset Hammie...that is why I want to avoid a visit as much as possible. The trip in of itself on the bus and everything, out in the cold and stuff, would be very tramatic and stressful for Hammie.

Ooooh, that sounds soooo cute! I can just imagine. :-) I love the name Herbie btw, Herbie, Herbie, Herbie...it's adorable.

>When he was 3, he passed away but i know he had a good life and got through it.

It sounds like Herbie lived a full and comfortable life. :-)
