>sadly, that's an understatement :-(

Similar to a hyperbole......?

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. ;-)

A hyperbole, largely synonymous with exaggeration and overstatement, is a figure of speech in which statements are exaggerated or extravagant. It may be used due to strong feelings or is used to create a strong impression and is not meant to be taken literally. It gives greater emphasis. It is often used in poetry and is a literary device.

Some examples of hyperboles include:

"He is as big as a house!"
"I'm so hungry I could eat a horse!"
"That's the worst idea in the world."

The opposite is an understatement, e.g. "Hitler wasn't a fair leader" or litotes, e.g. "Hitler wasn't the nicest guy".

In show business, hyperbole (known as hype or media hype) is the practice of spending money on public relations in an attempt to bolster public interest in (for example) a movie, television show, or performing artist. Often the entertainment value of the thing being hyped is exaggerated.

A common mis-pronunciation is "hyper-bowl." The correct pronunciation is phonetically said as "hye-per-bowley."

Kind regards

Nick

i actually don't see how it's an understatement, except insomuch as the devastation is so bad that no words could adequately convey it.

i agree that "hitler was not very nice" is an understatement, though.

when hyperbole becomes the norm it does start to seem that way...

i meant that use of the term 'melodrama' to describe what has been happening is an understatement.

oh, i see. but actually, i think it's not:

mel·o·dra·ma Audio pronunciation of "melodrama" ( P ) Pronunciation Key (ml-drm, -drm)
n.

1.
1. A drama, such as a play, film, or television program, characterized by exaggerated emotions, stereotypical characters, and interpersonal conflicts.
2. The dramatic genre characterized by this treatment.
2. Behavior or occurrences having melodramatic characteristics.

This seems like such an occurrence.

The first part of the meaning is about the Rocky Mountains ~ which are in America and Canada, how can Britain take the credit for them? lol

Wikipedia was created by 2 Americans ~ but the actual article you have got from wikipedia for the word understatement is a 'stub'

Wikipedia:Stub

Stubs are articles which have not yet received substantial attention from the Wikipedia editors. They have been created, but don't yet contain enough information to be truthfully considered articles. The community believes that stubs are far from worthless. They are, rather, the first step articles take on their course to becoming complete.

The objective of this article is to provide a general guide for dealing with stubs. It is recommended that all users read the Essential information section, which consists of the first half of the article. Additional information contains data which might be of interest only to advanced users, and thus is optional.

Perhaps the guy who wrote it lived in the Rocky Mountains and had just recently watched Monty Python's The Meaning of Life..

Kind regards
