I don't hate America. I have made a contribution, small that it may be. I wish I could do more.

Anyway, Canada will be helping. Today, our Prime Minister issued a statement offering support, and said that the DPM and other Cabinet Ministers are in discussions with American counterparts to determine what assistance Canada can provide.

http://www.pm.gc.ca/eng/news.asp?id=570

Also, I heard on the news that the Premier of the province where I live has offered the use of medical, emergency and rescue personnel.

Whenever I start despairing about all the evil in the world, I think of the guy that changed my tire on the busy highway in work clothes for no good reason. He never got more than my sincere thank you. You hear about all the bad that people do, but they are better than you think. I think people only take advantage because they've been screwed over so much in their life. I think if those same looters were in a situation to offer selflessly to someone, they would do so. Stealing from a nameless 'big brother' is a little different.

I agree with what you are saying... to an extent. I've been around these "looters" in NO before, on several different occasions. Yes, they believe that they've been screwed over... only b/c their families have taught them so. These "looters" are the same people who are on welfare and stealing money from the tax payers by not getting jobs when they can. The "looters" would not get such negative publicity if all they would steal was food, water, and other needed goods. But they are not owed a new tv, toaster, purse, several pairs of Nike shoes, guns, play stations, etc. And, these are the same "looters" who refused to leave, and when aid came to them by way of rescue boat, they [the looters] literally kicked the boat away, telling them [the boat drivers] to just turn on the pumps. If they are that screwed over, how in the would can they get "paid back" from being screwed over if they are refusing good spirited citizens trying to save them with a boat ride, shooting at the helpful boat drivers [with stolen guns], and shooting policemen. Please tell me, the tax payer, where I screwed them. These people [the looters] are so self centered that all they care about is how to profit from others; no matter what [death of inocent people]. Please explain to me that if they needed to be "paid back" for getting "screwed" so much in their life time, why they [the looters] refused assisstance, used the lack of aid as an excuse to rape and kill people in the darkness, be given the right, rather be excused, to loot and steal from stores that the tax payer has already paid for and will pay to have it rebuilt, products and items absolutely unneeded and unnecessary to survive. I totally understand stealing diapers, baby food, water and food during this disaster; but, the excuse for materialism is not to be used as pay back for them being "screwed" in the past.

Yep... right again... my husband (as a nursing student) is giving aid in one of the make shift shelters. They have been told that they can not go to the bathroom w/o someone else, let alone walk to their cars by themselves. I just talked to him via someone else's cell phone (he forgot his b/c of the rush to get there) and he said that they are fighting b/n each other in the shelters...mass histeria. Please keep all health care workers in your prayers... I know that my husband has to stay there overnight...w/o change of clothes nor any extra $$$$$. His stressful situation is now very similar to those who he's trying to help.

I'm sorry the situation's so bad, but please don't post anything that could lead to those on welfare feeling accused or put down.

If you or others have questions about this or about posting policies in general, or are interested in alternative ways of expressing yourself, please see the FAQ:

http://www.dr-bob.org/babble/faq.html#civil

Follow-ups regarding these issues should be redirected to Psycho-Babble Administration. They, as well as replies to the above post, should of course themselves be civil.

And follow-ups regarding welfare and foreign aid should be redirected to Psycho-Babble Politics.

Thanks,

Bob

I Have some friends who went with their boats to try to rescue some people in New Orleans.

Someone stabbed one of my friends and took his boat. I am disgusted.

An Acadian Ambulance driver was robbed when he went to help.

Who is gonna want to help these people? I am disgusted. - Did I say that already?

Yes they do, but that was not stated as an opinion, it was stated as fact. Even if it had been stated as opinion, it's no less hurtful than saying " I think it's all the black people who are causing problems" and the facts are, that it's not true, opportunists come from all walks of life
I didn't respond to that post out of self righteous indignation, or a desire to add to any tension, but out of hurt. I'm on welfare and statements like that cut me to the quick. It's a terrible terrible thing that Dominique and others are going through right now, and I'm sure that people say things that they wouldn't normally, laying blame is a common reaction.

I try to understand that, and perhaps I could have been more gentle in my post. However I made no ad-hominem remarks, I stated what is true, and statistics will back me up.

I too have a right to respond to something that affects me deeply and personally. There is nothing uncivil about correcting a remark that negatively and falsely catagorizes any group of people.

((((Gabbi)))))

I'm on welfare too.
But it is better than resorting to a life of crime, I would have thought ;-)
Though if I had done so I dare say I would have been better off
(The possibility of prison aside)
I suppose the two aren't mutually exclusive...
But I really don't think I'd bother with fighting to get appropriate welfare payments...
Putting up with the 'welfare bum' attitude which fortunately isn't so very prevalent in my society
If I had an alternative way to make ends meet

Some people are opportunists...
And unfortunately
Circumstances that have the potential to bring out the best in people...
Also have the potential to bring out the worst...

Different people react differently.

And some people freak out when faced with such loss...

like how sometimes when someone goes into the water to rescue another from drowning and the person drowning is so frightened that they cling...

And if they can't be made to stop the person has to leave them...

Or they will both drown.

I appologize to anyone who took offense to the welfare issue. Yes, I am under a great deal of stress right now (as are many others) and was ranting. I see how someone could take offense to my words. But please know that I was upset with the looters and DO NOT claim that all welfare recipients are bad people. I have family members and friends that are aided by the welfare system themselves.
In my opinion, I just feel that the "looters" whom are stealing unnecessary goods, should not be excused on the basis that they feel it as being "owed" to them.

Thank you for the apology, I appreciate it, that's one of the only times I've been hurt by something said on Babble

People who loot are looters.. that's it, they aren't connected to any class of people other than those who steal

Right.
Just like 'I DO NOT claim that all black people are bad people' or 'I DO NOT claim that all homosexuals are bad people'.

Because it still sounds like there is an assumption that more are than are standard in a typical population otherwise why draw attention to the classification (people on welfare, black people, homosexuals)?

>I have family members and friends that are aided by the welfare system themselves.

Yeah and some of my best friends are black etc...

> In my opinion, I just feel that the "looters" whom are stealing unnecessary goods, should not be excused on the basis that they feel it as being "owed" to them.

I don't think anybody suggested this.
I don't think anybody suggested excusing their behaviour.
I don't think anybody suggested that they felt it was owed to them either.

I'm sorry you are under a lot of stress...
But please be careful about making assumptions about groups of people...
There are people here from those groups...
And they might think you are talking about them...

And then they feel under stress...

And round and round we go...
