Update on my job situation

Posted by Angela2 on August 29, 2005, at 18:08:19

Today I asked my boss if she could pay me what the desk clerks are making. I was so nervous about talking to her. But I'm glad I did, because she said YES. I will be making the starting wage for front desk clerks. It's still not what I want to be making, and so that's why I'm looking for another job, but it's above min wage. Also, things have been going better socially the past few days too. I have been less nervous at the desk and less worried about what people are saying about me. Perhaps I am becoming more familiar with my job and realizing that the people I work with are actually nice people. Thank you everybody for your thoughts and support. :-)

Thanks Damos :-) I don't know why it's so hard for me to be assertive in certain situations, but I feel really good about myself now that I've done it.

Wow! Asking for a raise? Quite impressive. Not everyone has the guts to do that. I don't think that I ever have. You go girl!

As for worrying about people talking about you; that reminds me of a situation at work I've been wanting to vent about (I doubt your situation is like this). I hope you don't mind me doing it in your thread. There's a group of girls that all they do is talk about each other (and not kindly either). I get so-o-o sick of it. These girls will talk about ANYBODY. I'm like, can we please talk about something else??? And since I blurt out stuff like, "Well I like her, she's never been anything but nice to me," rather than going along with the crowd, I've focused their negatism on me. I've also started to hang out with the guys (less gossipy) in the department, which makes them dislike me even more. They are so jealous its ridiculous. But I just keep going to break with them like I always have, despite the glares of a couple of them, and eventually they move on to someone else. Its irritating, but I'm not going to let them force me out (there are a couple of people I genuinely like who aren't as mean spirited about their gossiping). I just try to remind myself how insecure you'd have to be to feel the need to constantly put other people down that way.

Sometimes I think maybe I should secretly record them and then play it for whoever was talked about. But I'm not quite that vindictive. I'd probably start trying to figure out where to hide the recorder and then lose interest when it became too difficult. But its a fun thought.

Sometimes people just blow me away. I guess that's why I'm becoming such a hermit. Fortunately, I occasionally meet that lone cool person that makes it worth talking to people at all. I wish my friend hadn't moved to San Fransico! :-(

TC, It takes guts to stand up to a bunch of meanie girls. But it sounds like you have everything under control. Yeah, tape recording them sounds like a funny thing to do. I bet they would be p*ssed! Note: I am not consenting to this behavior. LOL

Yes, meeting that one person who is worth it all is a great thing. Especially when you are not looking for it.

Take Care.

Thanks Angela2! I hope your job is going well.

You should have heard the meanie girls yesterday. This one chic is so obviously jealous that I've befriended this guy that used to talk to her all the time. They are both married, and I don't think she is into him or anything, its more like she resents that he talks to me so much (our desks are on either side of him). There's already been the comment directed toward him when I was out one day that he told me about ("so are you going to get some work done today since your little friend isn't here?"). And yesterday she starts talking to him and another guy about how her particular ethinticity (which I won't name) is the best for a wife because they're submissive and will do whatever the man wants. I didn't think that was much to brag about, but it was obvious it was a slight against me. Of course the guys present were oblivious, but it was obvious to me. You know how you can just tell some times that women are being intentionally bitchy.

I tried not to let it effect me, but it really irritated me. I never respond to direct insults, I tend to stay silent and just steam. Of course I always think of the snappy retort later.

Oh, and the whole group of girls had a bitch fest because I ordered pizza for lunch with the guys and nobody asked them. Of course it doesn't matter that they order food all the time and leave me out when I sit at the same table with them for lunch everyday!!! I really don't know how I tolerate them! But like I said, there are a couple of ladies in the group that I like (they just aren't bold enough to speak up), so I just ignore the mean ones.

Today I was out for jury duty, so I look forward to hearing what was said about me in my absence. My guy friend promised to tell me anything he hears. Its satisfying to know the guys all think I'm cooler than all the other gossipy chics, and they've got my back. Especially since it seems to make the girls so-o-o jealous!

Mwa-ha-ha (evil laugh).

-Angela2 and whoever's interested-

Okay, I found out the latest from the mean girls. Apparently all I do all day is move icons around on my computer. The fact that I have a quota to make, which I've never not made, doesn't seem to make much difference. I also heard that some people said they were surprised it took so long for them (the mean girls) to turn on me. Apparently it usually happens sooner. I'm trying to keep this whole thing in perspective. Its pretty ridiculous, but annoying.

How old are these girls? They seem really immature! Have you told your boss? Maybe she/ he can tell them to stop :)

They're grown. Just inmature. I don't think the boss could do anything. He's not very helpful.
