Quitting my job soon.

Posted by Angela2 on August 21, 2005, at 13:50:14

I work as a front desk clerk at a library. I am around people and dealing with people all the time. My job title is library page even though I am almost always at the front desk. So I only make 6.00$ an hour when all the other clerks are making like 10 or 12. I am sick of this job. And I was wondering, does anyone know how I can quit gracefully? I am thinking about taking a job in a factory but what am I supposed to tell them?? I am quitting their white collar job to take a blue collar job? I am a college graduate. They will probably laugh at me. It's nobody's business what I do. I just don't know how I am supposed to get past that. I mean, everyone will be asking what I'm gonna do. I don't wanna lie. What am I supposed to tell them? :-O

Hi Angela...

Don't worry about what "they" think..just do what you feel best inside. You are the one who has to go to the job day in and out.

Best wishes,
Jay

I would tell them that you need to quit b/c you found a job with better pay. Hey, they might even make you an offer of more $ to get you to stay.

I knew someone who worked at a library and his employers always acted like they were giving him some great gift to let him work there--even though the pay was awful. Maybe it is a library thing.

Best,
EE

Demoralising. Sounds demoralising :-(
Hmm.
Is it a general library or an academic library?
Do they have other positions available within the library that you could apply for?
Could you try and hit them up for a pay rise?
(They worst they can say is 'no')
Are there other libraries around where you might be able to get a job for more pay?

I'm just thinking... I know someone who got a biology degree then worked as a teacher for a bit. The stress got too much so she left and took a job as a cataloguer (assigning bar codes and call codes to books). She liked the work atmosphere (lots of shared lunches and nice people) but the pay wasn't great... Then they noticed she had a degree in biology. They paid for her to take some library courses via correspondance... She ended up with some qualification or other and now is the head science librarian. She runs tutorials teaching science students how to conduct efficient database searches etc etc. She loves it.

I'm wondering whether there might be prospects for anything like that?

I understand about how being paid less than others can be really demoralising... But are there prospects of a raise or a new position???

It's about the money, but it's also about the way I feel there. I'm just not sure that library science is the way I want to go in. I get really nervous at the front desk helping people and I've had paranoia attacks a few times. I am sick of it. I just want something with a little less interaction with people. At the same time, I feel like I'm making the wrong decision, because of what I've been taught (never give up, don't throw in the towel when things get hard, etc.). Like, what if I don't like it at a factory either? I'd have gone through the stress of switching jobs for no reason.
This is a community public library. Not an academic one. I would like to ask them for a raise, but what's the point if I'm just going to leave? But I dunno, I think this is something I just have to do. To understand life better. Maybe I won't like the factory job. But Atleast I'll know I don't like it. Maybe I'll decide I want to endure social interactions during my job. Aaah! I'm so depressed about this. Sorry. I just am in a rough spot right now:(

Tell them you want to make more money. All truth is the best in an interview.

I am going to give you the advice I always shyed (sp?) away from, but it is good advice! Tell them how you feel, why you are planning on leaving if things don't change for the better (for you), and see what happens. Don't think of it as giving an ultimative think of it as being ambitious. If they call your bluff, and you end up leaving then the job wasn't meant to be anyway.
