Desperately need computer help! PLEASE

Posted by KaraS on March 12, 2005, at 16:03:21

I have some kind of virus or worm. My system keeps shutting itself down after only a few minutes. I've tried reverting my harddrive to a previous time as well as run AVG, ADAWARE and maintenance functions. I've gotten messages that there's a problem with the "Loadqm" file. Is there anything I can do here or do I have to call a professional?

For some reason, my computer seems to be working well again. I reverted my harddrive one more time and then proceeded again. Again, shortly after that it crashed. From then on though it has been fine. VERY STRANGE. I keep thinking the bottom is going to fall out soon though and maybe wipe out everything I have. This has never happened before.

Hi Kara. I'm glad to hear that your computer has been behaving better this evening. Do you have a PC or Mac? If you have Windows, what version do you have (98, XP, etc)?

Hi. Several times in the past few years, I've gotten a lot of help on a Google Group Usenet message board that is geared towards Windows 98 users. I've seen many posts from people who have other versions of Windows, and usually they are re-directed to the appropriate board. Sometime their questions are answered on the Windows 98 board. The group I used was:

microsoft.public.win.98.gen_discussion

I think there are many such groups. As in any unmoderated Usenet group or message board, there are some unhelpful trolls and spammers, but I found they were far outnumbered by those who are dedicated to helping others.

Thanks so much! That will come in very handy I'm sure.

Oops! I'm so sorry. I shouldn't have typed a period in between win and 98. Go to Google, click on Groups. In the search bar, type:

microsoft.public.win98.gen_discussion

Hit enter, and that should take you to the group.

You can mention that you have Windows ME but don't know whether there is a group for ME. Ask your questions and I think you'll get some replies within a day or two.

I do think it might be helpful to ask some questions on that Windows98 group I mentioned above; however, I see that there are some non-Google newsgroups for Windows ME users. They can be accessed through:

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsME/support/newsgroups

Although I've used the Windows98 Google group, I've never used the microsoft ME group, so I can't say whether or not it's any good.

I'm sure you know this, but just in case you've never posted on a Google group, don't use your real name or main screen name for the newsgroup; otherwise, you'll be inundated with spam from now until the end of time. Set up an alternate screen name for a newsgroup. Some people get "anonymizer" type accounts. I don't know whether that's necessary. Just don't use your real name. Use an alternate screen name, so if you are harassed, you can just drop that screen name.
