I'm looking for support/help re adult ADD. I was diagnosed just over a year ago, despite a life time (I'm 50 yr. old) of symptoms that could have earned me the "adult ADD poster child" award. All of the things that provided sufficient structure through my adult years (marriage, job, social circle) fell apart over the past 3 years. I am barely coping. (I've been through over half of my retirement funds and I'm behind on my mortgage. I'll be using the rest of the IRA to keep my condo.) I'm taking prozac and adderall, which helps, of course. What I really need is structure. I'm hoping to get advice regarding how to establish routines and prioritize and, ideally, a "partner" to help me monitor my activities/stay on-task.

I was worried about prejudicing the sorts of responses people might get...
I don't know...
I was even having second thoughts about the one that I did redirect to the psychology board.:-(

Perhaps these people would prefer to hear about medications that may help them...
Or alternative medications that may help them...
Or psychological treatments that may help them...
I have no idea.
I have no idea what may or may not help them and I don't know what to say in response at the moment and I seem to be the only person responding over on the newbies board so I didn't really know what to do. I thought that redirecting was better than leaving them unanswered and I thought social might have them get more responses.
Please sign up as a newbie greeter
Need a little help peoples
I think the board should be trashed IMO

Oh dear.. Your right, absolutely right, it's better than leaving them unanswered, and I'm not sure even about psychology.. which is why I never have the gumption to re-direct..
*sigh*

So no one has anything to say about this?
Where are the other ADD'ers?!
Well here is one.
I think there are people who can relate to what you are going through. It's why we're here.
I've been dealing with such issues.
I am on the precipice of executing on a directed functional organized approach.
Basically get the heck out of dodge and going somewhere else and starting over.
My SO and I are in agreement about this.
Go somewhere where you can start over and no one knows you. There's only one chance to make a first impression. :)
Have a strategy to work on.
I'm leaving all the distractions behind and wil only have what to focus on that needs to get done like work and career.
Take classes in business because as it applies to business so it applies to you and how you communicate your worth to others.
By doing that and helping others in their endeavors, so you become valueble to others. By taking classes or something you get out of the house. You just
have to get out of the house.
I got a laptop and can go to free wifi spots to connect.
Take the medication necessary to alleviate symptoms and allow you to be more directed and focused even if for short periods of time.
When you go to do a task ask yourself where does fit on a list of priorities. Can it wait or can you do it later and do something else that needs to be done sooner? What tasks are the one that need to be done to get you closer to your goal?
With ADD its really hard to let go of tasks you are more hell bent on doing rather than doing some that need more doing to help you. You just have to let the distractive ones go and forget about them. I think people with ADD cant divide their time between tasks. It's either all or nothing on one specific thing at a time. It sucks but sometimes you just have to go with it or risk getting into an endless mind loop that slows everything down. Hoping you get out before its too late, before you have to get that other thing done.
Im breaking a loop now. Without being to ospecific, I released my mind and put on music that drives me. And here I am now.
Going on to something else now...

Lists. If I am to get anything done I have to make a list in the morning that I can refer to during the day. It's the only thing I've found to keep me from getting too distracted.
I've got the symptoms, but my doc hasn't tested me for it.

Hi Logan,
I think your post about adult ADD may have gotten lost in the shuffle. There are several good books out there.
One is
"Driven to Distraction: Recognizing and Coping with Attention Deficit Disorder from Childhood Through Adulthood"or "ADD-Friendly Ways to Organize Your Life"
You can click on any of these links and go directly to Amazon. If you read any of these, would you mind posting about them here? I've got them on my Amazon wish list, and I would love hearing feedback from someone before I buy any of them.
Also, I don't know if you see a therapist, but there are also cognitive behavioral techniques out there that should be covered by insurance that can help you accomodate to your diagnosis.
Good luck!

Then I had to switch to Effexor XR and Adderall XR 30mg and Risperdal 1mg. which has worked for quite a while now.
This is the end of the thread.
