Well, I had a nice (ya right) Christmas gift from my dog this year. 3 a.m. the morning of the 24th, my dog woke me up looking all happy and excited. I thought she had to go out, so I got up. When I walked passed one of the spare bedrooms, I saw something on the floor, and thought perhaps I was too late and she had had an accident (which never happens). So, I grabbed something to clean up whatever it was. When I reached down to pick it up, as soon as my kleenexed hand touched it, all I heard was "weet, weet, weet" (sounds more authentic when I do it out loud). IT WAS A FREAKING BAT! Thank God it didn't start flying around, it just laid there. Dakota (my dog) was just so darn proud of herself. Her little tail was just spinning out of control with the excitement of her find! Given my fear of any flying creatures, I could not touch the thing again. So I put a box over top of it (with air holes so it could breath), and the next day had someone come over and get it out of my house. Poor little Dakota lost her playmate.

I like bats. My cat brought in a bat once, or the bat just got in by itself or something. The bat was still flight-worthy. Man, it was exciting watching the cat leap straight up in the air to try and land the bat. It was an old apartment with super-high ceilings-- not easy to catch the bat. I think I eventually got the bat out of the air with a broomstick and caught it in a shoebox.

You are a lot braver than I. I have been terrified of any creature that flies since I was about 6 years old and a babysitter had my brother and I stay up to watch "The Birds" with her. When she put me to bed I told her I wanted to keep my light on because I was afraid (after the movie). She refused, and told me she would come back in and turn it off if I turned it on. After she turned the light off, she shut my door and left me quaking in the dark. Needless to say, my fear (irrational as it is) of birds and any creature that flies has not diminished since that time. Oh well, I am a freak!

You just gotta love cats and dogs and how proud they are of bringing you that beloved gift that they worked so hard at catching. I've found birds perched between the couches...terrified (and me even more) and a few weeks ago, the cat ran in the door at 2am (I let him in) and he had this tiny mouse in his mouth (alive and kicking) and I was more worried about him hurting the mouse (he only wanted to play). Luckily, I put on my brave face, and caught the mouse in our laundry basket and threw it outside (no wonder I battle with insomnia). Anyone else still up and worrying about bats and cats etc??

One of my mom's cats loved bringing her and the other cat (a female) "gifts". One day, he brought in a chipmunk, which got loose and ran through the house for over a day before it was finally caught and freed.

Now I would have loved that (I'm so daft). When I visited Seattle, I was so into the squirrels I used to just sit at the glass door and watch for hours on end, feeding them and befriending them (OK - I'm certifiable).

Thank God I live in a high-rise condo so my 2 cats can't bring me *living* presents.
