Which One Will Win?

Posted by saw on December 9, 2004, at 1:27:07

A Cheroke elder sitting with his grandchildren told them: "In every life there is a terrible fight - a fight between two wolves. One is evil: He is fear, anger, envy, greed arrogance, self-pity, resentment, and deceit.

The other is good: Joy, serenity, humility, confidence, generosity, truth, gentleness, and compassion."

A grandchild asked, "Grandfather, which wolf will win?"

The elder looked him in the eye and replied:

"The one you feed"

This was food for thought for me. I guess I'm feeding the wrong wolf!

I agree. This is a great parable. I first encountered it in an intensive outpatient group immediately following my hospitalization. I even wove it into one of my poems posted on Writing a few months back ("Two Wolves"). And coincidentally, I just stumbled across it two days ago in a book I was reading. I wonder if George Lucas has ever seen the tale. His "Star Wars" notion of being "seduced by the Dark Side" because you "feed" the Dark Side with your anger and fear certainly seems to echo the same idea. I seem to remember reading that he said he drew mainly on Eastern religious mythologies to develop his conception of the "Force," especially Buddhism and Shinto. Obviously this same idea of dark emotions and thoughts vs. positive ones within us occurred to philosophers in that part of the world too. Atticus
