I have been finding it VERY therapeutic for my depression and anxiety.
There was a point in my life when I felt my absolute worst and I would try to sing a song or listen to lyrics of some of my favorite songs and end up bawling my eyes out. What a strange symptom of dpression/anxiety I think that was!!! It was as if my brain could not process the music and it's message in a normal way or something.
Anyway, I am getting so much "joy" from singing my heart out these days and my kids absolutely love it. I'm not a big country fan, but I play Faith Hill's "Breathe" CD every day and it makes me so happy even though some of the songs are sad songs.
I'm thinking of getting involved with the local theatre group here when my kids are all a little older. I love a good musical!!!

I can fake sight read, and I love to sing lyrics in Porteguese, although I have only attempted to learn the language phonetically, Haven't the faintest idea what I'm saying, but it sounds very poetic.
I think I sound better singing in my car than in my shower.

I sound better in the shower. Perhaps it's the resonance?
I love to sing, although I only do it when I am alone. It's so so therapeutic to me. Perhaps it's all the breath control it takes.
Nora Jones does it for me. She's one who tends to sing in the same key I seem to need to sound non-awful. I would love to take actual voice lessons some day to learn to sing on key.

Hi I like to sing and when I sing near my pets they like it and do not howl so I am not too bad. It was cute the other day I had my CD player on and Gwen Steffani was singing...my dog woke to her voice and looked to me like what did you say..it was cute I wish I sounded the weay he must think. Have you ever watched VH1's MotorMouth? LOL WATCH OUT people are being taped singing when they think they are alone in the car...friends set them up :)

SINGING!!! I could go on and on about it.
This is the one area in my life where I am not ashamed and refuse to run myself down.
I can sing and I do have talent and many have said my voice is beautiful.
I am favouring the light opera at the moment. It gives me power. I can sing in about 5 different languages. (Haven't mastered Portugese yet PC). I am totally at ease and know all of Sarah Brightman's material, including Phantom of the Opera.
And with all my hang ups and phobias, least of all depression, I have no problem standing on a stage and singing to hundreds of people.
I spent many of my school years in choir. Firstly as descant, then soprano and sometimes semi soprano. With age, the descant thing is a bit of “days gone by”. I have a couple of gold awards from eisteddfods I sang in.
After school I spent many years as the lead singer in the worship team of the church I attended. I don't attend church anymore though.
My "formal" training in singing has been wide and varied and has allowed me to teach a couple of people singing techniques. I have enjoyed the odd karaoke event but lately sing for my husband, son and me! Sadly, there have been days where depression has robbed me of the pleasure singing gives me.
My biggest feat and my proudest singing accomplishment ever, was to sing at my Dad's funeral service 3 weeks ago.
Well, that is my singing career.
Sabrina
(Fallen4MyT - I really enjoy Gwen Stefani, especially her latest "What you waiting for")

Wow Sabrina you have a formal singing background I was stunned you sing in so many languages. Mostly I wanted to say I am so sorry about your dad's passing I haven't been around for months but on the flip side I am so proud and in AWE of you that you sang at his funeral. That had to be very hard in many ways. I could not even speak at my mom and dad's funeral masses so I really give you credit
Now on Gwen :) well, don't get me started I love Gwen and do have her new CD and Sarah McLachlan I just love her voice

Yes Sara McLachlan is good. Then there is Barbra Streisand - I have sung a lot of her stuff. Celine Dion too (can only take her in smallish doses though). I sang "Fly" by her at Dad's service.
Gee, there are so many others that have influenced my singing and many, many songs that I am fortunate to hear a couple of times and can then sing them.
My next "project" is to learn some of Charlotte Church's material.
I'm having fun now!!

So you certainy have not lost the song bird in your heart. I am a music addict I swear :) I annoy my husband with how I can jump from one kind of music to another say mellow to heavy metal. I think Sara FEELS her music more but I have to say I think Streisands voice is perfect....and Oh that song you sang for dad it's so pretty and perfect.

I know what you mean about jumping from one style to the next.
Right next to all my Sarah Brightman and classical CD's is my husbands very prized ACDC collection.
While we're on the subject, another new favorite is Josh Groban. I sing along with him so often. At the moment though, he makes me feel a bit sad.

I imagine that Groban would be a little too close to your pain right now but he is awesome.
Lately, I seem to mostly listen to my never CD;s , Gwen, Eminem, Seether and U2...STILL I am always drawn to Amy Lee's voice from Evanesence.....way pretty do you know her songs??
I hang on lyrics too...Isn't it odd that Gomer Pyle dude had a pretty voice singing?

Oh boy, I am absolutely smitten with Amy Lee. Everybody's Fool is close to my heart, especially after seeing the music video. She has an outstanding voice and I really love the emotion I hear in her music. She could teach me a thing or two. I have her CD and play it often.
Eminem - good stuff. It was Eminem weekend on MTV this weekend so that was a good treat. My husband just adores his new spoof song, Just Lose It (I think?)
I also lean towards older bands such as foreigner, air supply, chicago. All wonderful sing along stuff, but all with special meaning to me.
I hadn't looked at Groban's music like that. I'll wait awhile before I listen to him.
Enya? Nice and soothing if the mood calls for it.
What a fantastic topic - where's everyone else?

I was a choir singer also- District Choir in Pennsylvania, USA as a kid... Many cigarettes, and newly-developed allergies ago. When I'm not allergy-ridden, I sing along to Sade, Nora Jones, but mostly Alison Kraus. You have to check her out.
On the days I can sing all parts(- she sings them all and records them one on top of the other) of Alison's "Pen of Love in my Heart" (I think it's called) from her "Now that I Found You" CD, I know my voice is "on". Of course, I sing all of the cuts on that one and "Alison Kraus, A Collection" CD, too. If I can sing BOTH full CD's back to back, at full volume, I KNOW I'm on fire!
And the music is sooooooo pretty.......

Sunny I know and love Alison Kraus I liked her wow when she first hit the charts..you sing like her? What a blessing and you could make some cash from it. I sometimes wonder if artistic people tend to have more issues in life. I am artistic and well I am on this board :)

well, they do say that creative people utilize the left quadrant of their brain... so I guess you could argue that we're not in our right mind.
(hee hee!)Honestly, I even sing to commercial jingles on TV!

I am so happy to hear there are other opera singers. Although I sing light classical / light opera, I yearn to be able to get some formal training in opera "proper".
Opera is truly soul soothing. To listen to and to sing.
Glad to meet you.
Another soprano - Sabrina

singing and joking are my two favorite pasttimes... If I can manage more than a single one-liner, or sing an entire album, I know I'm not too depressed to be able to pick myself back up again...
I try to live in that left brain as much as possible... being in my "right mind" is often too stressful for long periods of time without letting the left one out to play !!!!
