what do you think about Hamm's gold medal?

Posted by JenStar on August 31, 2004, at 19:09:22

hi all,
did anyone watch the Olympics? If so, what did you think of the Paul Hamm gold medal fiasco? I think he should not have to give it back. I wanted to check & find out how other babblers feel about this!

I think he should have. (did he, I haven't kept up with this?). What a fiasco, though, not a good look at all for olympic professionalism. But in the spirit of fair play he did not win it fairly therefore I think he should give it back.

Did anyone see the NZ women rowers? One of them actually FELL OUT THE BACK OF THE ROW BOAT AND THEY HAD TO STOP THE BOAT TO FISH HER OUT OF THE WATER!!! Groan. How embarrasing...

I don't know if he *should* give it back, but I know that if I had it due to a judging mistake *I* wouldn't keep it. It would feel tainted.

Give me what I have earned. No more, no less.

I say keep it. The judges messed up, but the Korean guy's coaches also messed up by not catching the error in time. Hamm is entitled to the medal according to the rules. He didn't do anything wrong.

Remember that ice skating scandal in the pair competition in 02? They ended up issuing a 2nd gold to the Russians, but I don't remember people calling for the Canadians to return theirs.

I'm kind of mad at the commentators making it Hamm's duty to repair America's image by giving back the medal. Sheesh, what a burden to put on him.

I think he should keep it. You can't change the results after the game is over. Bad officiating is part of sports sometimes.

Also there were other mistakes in judging that were only apparent on replays and there was the overall strategy that the contestants used which was based on the officials bad call. If it had been changed it would have effected the overall competition in ways which cannot be known after the fact. The only fair way to do it would be to replay the entire competition and that's not going to happen (nor should it in my opinion.)

I think the international gymnastic association should get a bad sportsmanship award for trying to make Paul Hamm pay for their mistakes.

Of course I have sympathy for the Korean gymanst who believes he won but sports can be heartbreaking at times. And I have sympathy for Paul Hamm who will always have the shodow of controversey over his medal after a truly amazing performance.
