Sleep study update

Posted by Dinah on July 15, 2004, at 16:27:36

I saw my neurologist today and he said that the results of the daytime study were not consistent with narcolepsy. And that the results of the nighttime study were suggestive of narcolepsy in that I started my REM cycle early, but not really *consistent* with it. I'm not sure what on earth he means by that.

He did prescribe Provigil, which I think I'll take just out of curiousity, although my gut tells me it will be an absolutely dreadful medication for me (and my pdoc didn't think much of the idea either), because of my problems with agitation and anxiety.

I have to see him again in a month, which annoys me because he's one of those doctors who always runs very late. I was there forever, he hadn't checked my notes before seeing me etc. etc.

I also have mild sleep apnea during my REM cycle. Which I'm guessing may well be at least part of the reason for my night-time panic attacks where I wake up shooting across the room with my heart pounding. But it's not bad enough that he'll *force* me to use the CPAP machine, and I declined to try it. I don't think I'd like to sleep with a machine, and it might scare Harry.

It sounds like there are some answers, though mixed. You're not narcoleptic, but you have some traits? You don't have sleep apnea, but you do just a little?? It sounds like medicine does not have a firm grip on what purpose sleep has for us. I have never asked you, but do you ever take anything as a sleep aid - to keep you under the night long? Has that been avoided because of the suspicion of apnea?

My friend who went through the sleep study, was told that she was Sleep Deprived. HELLO!!!! That's why she was there!!! She felt that it did not accomplish much.

Thanks for the update, although we are still as ??!!$$%%@@ as to what's going on!

I take Klonopin and Depakote each night, and have for years. I have never had any trouble at all falling asleep (except when I'm hypomanic, and then it isn't a "problem"). My trouble has always been waking up at 3 am (4 am during daylight savings time or vice versa) and being too anxious to fall back asleep till 5 or 6. If the apnea plays a role in that, it might be worth looking into something to help. But I'm not convinced a machine is the answer. It doesn't happen all the time. It tends to come in cycles, like everything else in my life. :(

But the referral to the neurologist came because of my "involuntary naps", and of *course* I didn't have any during the sleep test. They only happen when I'm upset, and I wasn't upset.

Hmmm... sounds more like profound disassociation to me. Has that been explored?
