I am sooo sad! I wanted a little pug puppy for Christmas but now I know it's not going to happen. I know it sounds really dumb to be upset over this but I had something happen when I was 17 and I got a dog (he's a big beautiful rottweiler) and he has filled some holes in my heart. But I go through these phases I don't know if all women have them or what but every so often I start to desperately want a baby. I'm 20 no job and not married (yet) fortunately I am one of the ones who can see it and admit to it and overcome the selfish urge (I do not believe motherhood is selfish in anyway but not being prepared and doing it on purpose knowing it would mean less of a life for someone else is) But my doggy fills my heart and time. So I wanted to get another one to share all the love-lol. It's just sad for me and it being this time of year I guess. Those Pugs cost sooo much!!! I can't believe it. Also I would rather adopt a dog it's very important to me
that's how I got my rottie. Anyways I'm ranting and being silly so thanks for listening.

Ayla,
Your post touched my heart.
A couple of years ago I went through a divorce. The way things worked out, it was impossible for me to keep my dog. She is a Black and Tan Coonhound named Maggie, and is such a great companion. I miss her terribly. When going by the SPCA, or the places where we walked together, or by my old home, I cry. I want her back. I want to know where She is, and how She is doing. These are things that I cannot know though. I'm crying as I write this.
An animal companion fills quite a deep hole in one's heart.
I know too about that yearning to be a mother. A pet can help some, but can't fully satisfy that need. I suppose adoption could come close, but I don't know if that particular hole can be completely filled by anything else. Perhaps that's why the loss of my friend Maggie hurts so much. She played the part of precocious child, inquisitive (with a taste for old leather-bound volumes), playfull, eager, energetic. She too, loved children. I'm turning this post into a paean for my dog. I'll quit while I can still salvage the post. :-)
Anyway, I see in your post someone who is very smart. You are learning the skills you will need as a mother before becoming one. Many women learn on their first child. I think that you are quite wise.
I have a good friend who raises pugs. I don't think that she has any plans to have anymore pups real soon though. They are such fun, but they can be very interesting to move around though, especially with 5 or 6 running around your feet while you are trying to cross a room!
In closing, I think that you are quite wise, intelligent, and are someone who will be a very fine mother. You have a great deal of love, compassion, thirst for knowledge, and a desire to know yourself.
Also, Check out this site: www.cafepress.com/ppra
It is the northeast pug rescue organization. It might point you in a good direction.
Dee.

hi ayla
just thought i would commisserate.
pugs are wonderful dogs, and i would love to own one myself. ("my" pug, which is actually my parents' pug, is on the other side of the country.)they make wonderful companions. they don't bark (much), are highly trainable, and have cute little curly tails.
unfortunately, going rate for a pure-bred pug puppy is $1600 in my area. :( that's a lot of pennies to save before i can get my dream puppy.
don't have any advice or pointers, just a fellow puppy-less moper. for the last few years i have been saying to myself, "maybe next year". hopefully that year will come soon for both of us!

Ohh thankyou sooo much!! Now you made me cry :)
It's sooo good to hear those things! None has ever told me they think I'm smart or that I'll be a good mother and it means so much to me. So I thank you from the bottom of my heart. Somehow other "animal people" never cease to amaze me with their compassion. Anyways thankyou again you are a wonderful person and Maggie was lucky to have you and I'm sure she is happy just to have been with such a kind person for any length of time. Thanks,
Ayla

Ayla

Hi,
In my area, there are *tons* of rescue groups that specialize in certain breeds. You could get a pug rescue for almost nothing, and they've already assessed the dog's personality/health, etc.
I love rescue organizations!

I got my dog from Petfinder.com. They list dogs from shelters and rescue places all over the country. We had to travel quite a bit to get him, but he was just what my kids wanted. You can put in what breed you are looking for, and while most of the matches will be mixes, you do get to see the picture. If you find a dog you like, you can usually do the whole application process on-line.

I have done ALOT of research online to find a rescue for pugs and there are some but they require LARGE "donations" to their organization. When I say large donations I mean about what it costs to buy a pug puppy.
Also I have been researching petfinder it is a great resource. Well no luck so far but I should really get myself together a bit more anyway so I look at this as an opportunity to do that. Thanks for the support and suggestions it's very much appreciated.
This is the end of the thread.
