Good music to create ambience - suggestions?

Posted by PhoenixGirl on November 30, 2003, at 1:40:04

Hi guys. I want to try listening to some music that creates an "ambient" mood. Like, it could put you into a trance. I think a lot of this kind of music doesn't have a beat or a lot of stops and starts, it just sort of flows. Any suggestions for what I could look for?

"New Age" music would probably fit the bill. I really don't know who to suggest, though.

trance or ambient electronica... http://dir.yahoo.com/Entertainment/Music/Genres/Electronic/Trance/ and http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll. You won't find much of this at Walmart or anything...but a large music store, or Best Buy should have some of the artists on the last page...Paul Oakenfold is big, as well as, Shasha and Digweed, the Aphex Twins, and Astral Projection, I like Moby (get the album "Songs 1993-1998" or "18")

Also theres ambient New Age music http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&uid=UIDMISS70311222020543249&sql=C226 I don't know enough about it to suggest anything in particular though
good luck d

I used to meditate to Gregorian chants. Drove my husband crazy.

PhoenixGirl -

I would investigate artists like The Orb or Future Sound of London. Aphex Twin was also a good suggestion.

You could also try CDs of whale calls. Actually, the new age white noise stuff might be better than more of the techno ambient and trance.

I'm not so sure Paul Oakenfold, Moby, or Sasha and Digweed are good ideas - they have strong vocals, big beats, and a dance club feel to them.

Hi PhoenixGirl,

R. Carlos Nakai plays a mean Native American flute. http://www.canyonrecords.com/artnakai.htm

solo flute albums: Canyon Trilogy, Earth Spirit, and Emergence

And here's that New Agey thing (from above site): In 1995, Feather, Stone & Light, a musical trialogue with longtime collaborators William Eaton and Will Clipman, was noted as a Billboard Critic's Choice and quickly debuted on Billboard's Top New Age Albums chart, remaining there for 13 weeks.

I wish you luck. Please let us know what you find works for you.

This Pink Floyd album comes across as depressing at times, but ends on a beautiful, positive high note. This is echoed in both sadder songs like "Marooned", but also in the positive in "Coming Back To Life" and "High Hopes".

Enjoy this piece of ear candy...

Try the band "Love Spirals Downward"; their old albums are really soothing. Beautiful music and vocals..
also try Native American music; like Carlos Nakai....his flute music is incredibly relaxing..

I find the real 'new age' stuff to syrupy in general but there is some real wild stuff in the ambient genre. My fave for really inducing a beautiful trance is the double cd by Robert Rich: Numena & Geometry. Numena especially sends me to places I want to stay in forever.
