Since June until this past Monday I was taking Effexor XR for anxiety and panic issues. I started with 75mg and ended up at 225mg daily. I was a 5'5" 110 lb women to start with and went down to almost 100lbs at the start. I gained back most of the weight. The dr. kept increasing the dosage as I told him I was still having the same problems. I also told him I didn't think Effexor was right for me but he didn't listen. Finally on the 22nd of September he listened and decided we, I , should try Paxil now. So I needed to wean off the Eff. XR. As I assume most of you know it should take 2 weeks to a month at least to wean off these meds. I am already off by his standards. It has been just 14 days. He told me to start Paxil the next day which would have been today. Well thank God I do alot of reading and know a chiropractor who listens. My chiro is great and while didn't tell me not to take it, he would like to work with me off it. Fine. I thought that if I don't get results from him I will try Paxil. I am so glad I didn't take the Paxil today for the following reason. I love to read medical and medicine books so I know what I am taking and what I give my son. The book I read , followed by internet research clearly indicates DO NOT TAKE PAXIL IMMEDIATELY FOLLOWING EFFOXOR. It could lead to serotonin sydrome!! :O .
I am so mad at my family dr. for telling to do something that could harm me. Ok so I know I am not a dr. but if you are one and reading this am I right to be mad?
I have enough issues with those stupid electric shocks from the withdrawl of the Eff.Xr.
Thanks for reading.

I hear you. I have very little faith in general practitioners. A little knowledge about a lot of things makes them good at trivia games, but very little else. IMHO, at least. You might want to consider looking for a psychiatrist.

Hi,
I know what that feels like- side effects are horrible especially when they have long lasting effects. All I can tell you is that they will eventually stop, sometimes it takes a long time, but when you see it stopping you'll feel better hopefully. And I know what it feels like when the doctor doesn't listen- you know yourself and how YOU feel. I was on a very high dose of lithium for 1.5 years that was unneccesary and all it did was make me sleepy and I gained 20lbs. So hang in there and good luck.

Sorry if it's confusing, but there are a number of message boards here, and the one focused on medication issues is (just plain) Psycho-Babble. Here's a link:
