validation finally

Posted by gabbix2 on August 16, 2003, at 15:31:43

Well, any of you who've seen me post on babble for the past year have heard my tales of being on disability and constant poverty, and being without food, and no help being available. It was said so often I got tired of hearing myself talk about it.
Its finally been acknowledged. I live in Canada
and I was watching the news this afternoon, the situation for women on disability/welfare (in the province I live in exclusively) is so horrific
that the United Nations is actually holding a conference on it.
I'm not expecting anything to change, its just amazing to have it recognized. I know some people find it hard to believe that in such a wealthy country things could really be so terrible.
Of course my parents will still think its my budgeting, (sigh)

Your parents may think that, but it must feel good to you to have this validation. Not as good as food, but...

I'm glad someone's looking into it. Maybe it will spark some action to make things better. You need to see if you can get a transcript or some written information on the action, so that you can keep a reminder of that validation.

And you're right about parents. :(

When I moved, I found a junkheap apartment,
which was the cheapest I could find and would allow me 60.00 a month after my rent for groceries and clothing and whatever else.
My dad not out of caring, but out of disgust said "You can't live there!"
And you know, its like you're right dad,
I'm on welfare, and I have a mental illness
I'm ENTIRELY too good for this place!

I wonder who he thinks is supposed to live here?

And both my parents still ask,
"Well where does all your money go?"

Oh, my 60.00?? it must be my crack habit..

Hey Gabbi,

> Oh, my 60.00?? it must be my crack habit..

Tell your dad CAN $60 isn't enough for a crack habit. Hell, that's not enough for a chocolate habit. :-)

(I know, you're being your typical sarcastic self, but tell him anyway and see what he says, if anything.)

Ted

Gabbi....I know this brings little solace, but you are absolutely not alone here. I live in Ontario also, a land which has waged war against the poor and..well *anyone* who isn't rich! Since the PC's have gotten in power in 1995, they haven't raised the minimum working wage even .01 cent! They *reduced* welfare-disability rates, and introduced the doomed and stupid 'workfare' bull. They removed rent controls...made it harder to get student loans...played a part in raising tuition costs beyond anything like we have ever seen. Their 'privatization' cr*p is one of the many reasons we where hit so hard by the recent blackouts. (I know there are many reasons..but this is one, and I will gladley pass on evidence for those who need to know.)

I know this may all seem trivial and little...but on next election day, kick the bas*ards outta office! Ontario and Canada where once known as a place proud of it's kindness and community of helping each other. We can, and *gotta*, get some of that back...for your, mine, and so many million living with these horrible mental illnesses. There is far too strong a co-relation between poverty and mental illness. It is *not* yourbudgetting...but the budget of a government who enjoy their feast of decadence for them and their few little rich friends out playing golf, while the rest of us suffer.

By the way...do you know of the 'Mood Disorders of Ontario' group? Very fine people who can provide that extra little nudge of help when you are at the edge. (Or over it..or whatever.)

Peace and best wishes...
Jay

Thanks Jay, actually I'm out in B.C though, even worse off, the worst in Canada and according to the news program appalling for anywhere.
So I don't have the benefit of the Ontario mood disorders group. I'm just really lucky I don't have children.
