How do you remove a shard of glass from your hand?

Posted by giget on July 22, 2003, at 6:53:46

I broke a glass last night, and was trying to pick it up and got a shard in my palm. It is so samll but is killing me. Since it is clear glass I can not see it.

I started taking out the skin around it, but it still kills today. I ended up taking a sleeping pill, to get away from the pain. Luckily I am left handed and it is in my right hand...

But HOW do I get it out!!!!

Can you find someone to help you? They might be able to get a different angle to see better. Try a very bright light - perhaps the light will bounce off the glass and make it easier to see. How big is the piece of glass? If there has been bleeding, try rinsing the area. Do you have good tweezers (it might be worth buying a really good pair)?

If all else fails, you might be able to get your doctor to take it out (that might be less expensive than the Emergency room).

Good luck!! Let us know how it goes!

I broke a glass last night at home... it is just a small piece, nothing to go to the doctor for, it just kills.

I am at work and went to the sick room and into the first aid cabinate... We are a global company with tons of revenue... and they can not even completely stock the cabinate..... Each department has to pay for the kit!....

I have tryed the tweezers, the cutting out the hole skin, and I can not close my hand because it is in a part of the palm that flods....

Luckily I am left handed, but I still have to type all day long!

Funny, since the breakdown I am not that deep anymore.... I just am trying to figure out the problems of now and today.

I usta think of that type of stuff all the time, and contimplate the universe. It is funny how your view of the world changes after an episode....

If you want to talk about it.,... that is fine!!!
Maybe it will get my mind off my hand!

Well I made some guys day at work today...
Playing the fragile little womyn, needing a stronge man to get a little sliver out of her hand.... That is the type of men I work with...

And they know I stand for womyns rights and being equal in the workplace, so they contantly say something infront of me so I will speak up..

Hey I can play the womyn role if I have to!

I had tryed to get it out myself and only made the hole I created bigger...

We think he got it out, but I just have to wait and see how it feels in a while.

Soaking it in a mixture of baking soda and warm water may help it work its way out. If you're pretty sure you can expose it, but just can't see it, you could try hair removal wax or even a coat of Elmer's glue...the idea being that, once dry, it will lift out easily. Good luck.

Sometimes you do what you have to do. Glad it is out.

P.S. Why didn't you ask a woman?

On my floor alone, there are about 15 women and about 185 men. I work in the computer field so we do not have many women. Plus alot of the women are out at a job site, and the others left here are to squemish.....

So I had to ask a guy.

It can be trying on your nerves but also nice to work with so few women. Plus when I was thin, the men seemed to love me! Gotta remember I have been here for 5 years now, and most of the women were hired about 1 or 2 years ago!

Long story short, the women here could not handle it and we are WAY out numbered to the guys!

I (when I'm not on disability) am in the computer field, too. I know what you mean about the ratios of men to women. Usually, when I'm working, my best friend at work is a man - go figure.

Yeh,
I know alot of the people who have been here for a while, and that is the men. Some of the times I just fit in, like a guy, in a skirt that is. Went I go out after work with a group to a bar.... it is always me... and a table of guys.

I ended up cutting a 1/2 gap into my skin, but it looks better now... I still don't know if it is all out though...

Me too. Reality is so much more challenging. Before all the meds, dx, therapy, etc, I used to love to ponder the cosmic questions, whilst ignoring day to day reality entirely. Now when I meet folks who want to talk about the cosmic questions... I just think they're big phonies. Maybe I've swung too far in the opposite direction???

Go to the ER?

It is just a small sliver of glass... and I realized last night that it is not out.... Yek it was disgusting. So I just keep it cleaned out hoping it will work its way out....

Am I right? Will it do that?

sorry you're still having a problem. honestly, though, baking soda with a little water forms a "drawing paste" that has worked for me on many occasions. in the interest of expense, i would sincerely suggest this before spending upwards of $150 just to walk through the door at the ER or Urgent Care. good luck.
