I want to clarify something

Posted by yesac on June 22, 2003, at 14:30:33

Okay, I'm getting a bit paranoid about this whole name change issue. It seems like there has been a lot of talk lately about name changes and cryptic messages and secretive relationships, etc.

Maybe no one really cares, but I would like to just explain myself... Yes, I did changed my name last week, but I want to say that it really has nothing to do with the board. It's because my old name was a rather obvious name for people who know me to figure out, and I'd rather not have them stumble upon all this info about me. I like the relative anonymity of the board, but being able to share and get support about such deeply personal issues.

Anyways, so I was not trying to be deceptive or anything like that. I'm not trying to alienate people or make anyone feel dumb for not being able to figure out my old name or annoyed if they do figure out my old name!

That's just me. I don't know about other name-changers, but I would think/hope that most people have decent motivations for doing so.

I didn't mind at all your name change, although I think I agree that it is easy to figure out -- that is, if I'm correct on who you are.

There have been others here who changed their names for similar reasons. Don't fret it. :-)

I know it's easy to figure out... I sort of wanted it that way so that you guys (pb people) could get it but hopefully not my off-board friends/family! Although... I'm sure my family could figure it out with it being their last name too. Less concerned about them than others.

Anyone join me on the clueless couch?

Well, I don't know who is old and who is new here. If I know a poster by one name and that person disappears, they are lost to me. I guess for me, I have a relationship with ABCD and when ABCD is gone, that's it. I may establish a relationship with their new identity, or may not. I guess it would depend on whether they are writing in a thread I'm also posting to and we find we have something that connects us.

I am clueless about who the new names are. And, I regret that, it's sort of like losing a friend. But, if someone wants to change their posting name, it doesn't matter to me beyond whatever loss I might feel at losing a friend.

Wait.....I did figure out when dreamerz changed her name. With her very distinct posting style, combined with the absence of posts from dreamerz, it dawned on me one day that it might be the same person.

I'm sorry. That clueless feeling stinks.

You're right about Dreamer's distinctive style, but she also announced the change. I guess unless you read every post like I do, it's possible to miss an announcement.

OK, shall we vie for the most clueless? I didn't pick up on Dreamerz name change. I thought she was just taking a break from the board. Now I feel like a dolt!

Yes..I changed my name because someone knows I use this site, I thought he may be spying on me--I was probably paranoid..better be safe than sorry.
Now I'm not sure who's who , I've think I've worked out 2 posters.
I'm not replying much lately due to lack of energy , so I'm definately lying down lazily on the clueless couch.

It's strange for a newcomer like me to notice how many words are spent on speculation of posters' identities and agendas compared to actual socialising. Not a complaint, mind, just an observation. I'm gearing up to take away the veil and post an introduction on the next day my self esteem isn't on crutches.

I don't know if it's such a usual thing or just happening a lot recently. I've been on the board for almost 3 months and this is the first time it's come up since then (I think).

Yeah, exact same for me. I actually saw the person once reading the site, and ever since then it made me really uncomfortable thinking of him reading all of my posts. He still could be, possibly having figured out my new name, but I don't know. Don't want to change it again. Plus, anyone reading any of my posts who was somewhat familiar with me, no matter what my name was, could probably figure it out. I guess I just have to take that chance if I want to stay on the site.

I don't care who guesses my old name although I don't think I have any obligation to deny or confirm. I had hesitated to change it before because I thought it would be confusing but since it became apparent that it's happening all the time I went ahead. It's kind of like the rules (as I had mistakenly discerned them) had changed but at least it's out in the open now. And it's a good reminder to me that all is not as it seems. And that is a good thing for me-I was becoming too comfortable and forgot how very public and at the same time shadowy these places are. Since Dr Bob never deletes posts I think it also a good idea to change names if you accidentally post info that could identify you to some unknown lurker or acquaintance who happened on to it to prevent them from stalking you by google. I know that sounds a little paranoid but it does happen.

I certainly don't think I have an obligation, but if someone came right out and asked, I would probably answer. BUT! Possibly not if it was in the subject line. I'd rather have it be "hidden" in the actual posting.

Kind of scary really. It really is so public. We are all basically exposing ourselves to the whole world, anyone who happens to stumble upon this.

Been here on and off for 4 years--I've seen some name changes on occasion, but the attention to it and discussion about it seems a new phenom. Not that it matters, I guess.

Yup. This here is a published document that lives on in perpetuity. But it can be "seductive" to feel like it is a private conversation. Have to keep that in mind.
