Hi,
I contacted Allsup (sp?)- a national group of diability lawyers once it seemed obvious I couldn't return to work. I was diagnosed with bipolar/panic disorders and had a rough year (hospital, frequent shrink visits,etc.). I told my history to the lady who contacted me and she filled out all the forms, contacted my shrink (who has lots of experience with disability)- all I did was sign things. Three months later I was approved and social security even gave me a large check for back pay. I think the key was the lawyer (who charged the max fee -I think $4000- once I got my check) and my shrink who knew how to word things. I just had a review a few months ago (my statement said they would review me every 3-5 years) and my shrink filled out the form and my husband filled out something and they passed it again.
Hope this helped-judy

I butted in on your exchange when I saw the word disability there, and appreciated the link. I am seriously considering applying for Fibromyalgia/Anxiety/Name your emotional problem/etc.
Thanks for sharing the information,
Bina

I really got to the point where I was truly unable to go to work, I would start having major panic attacks as soon as I got to the freeway exit. I left a lot of personal belongings in my office because I couldn't pick them up, or even speak to anyone on the phone from work. SSDI was truly a lifesaver for me. I don't know if I ever can work again, perhaps if I change my field, but at least I have breathing room. Best of luck with whatever you decide- judy

I guess I don't think I'd be eligible, so I haven't looked into applying. I can drag myself to a job and back ok, but it is really difficult, and the rest of my life gets put on hold as it takes about all my energy to get there, do the work, and get home. By the time I get home I am really tired and also wired, so usually I battle insomnia. That's the standard 8-5 type job, like the temp job I had recently.
I can do other jobs, with more flexible schedules, ok.
Take care; you are sounding good!

It doesn't sound like a very positive time for you Shar. You suffer from major depression, right? That's considered one of the severe mental disorders- depression, anxiety- particularly panic disorder or PTSD, schizophrenia, bipolar and I think one other. It really depends on how debilitating it is, and only you can answer that question. I guess I think of all the years I paid into social security and I'm glad it was there for me. I do have to add that Medicare is good for general medicine but pretty useless for mental health, practically no one takes it and of course there is no prescription coverage. I hope you consider it an option, you can always go back to work once you feel better, and with the proper people helping you apply, it is not stressful at all (at least for me). take care, judy
