Could someone explain in as plain English as possible (not Computerese!) what is the difference between Spyware and Cookies? A brief definition of Spyware and a brief definition of a Cookie would be so helpful! Thanks to whoever can answer.

like Orwell’s "1984" , they watch you

they are odious and hidious

Okay, Tony, stop taking credit for writing a poem when we know Aurora did it. It's obvious that she wrote it, not you, by the references to apples as "rotten", talking to a dog in a condenscending way ("look up, Lassie"), & mention of milk.
Poor kitty, no wonder she takes drugs. If I were your kitty, I would too. At least, T.S. Eliot gave his cats credit for their intelligence like his brilliant Jennyanydots.
Oh! And make sure you tell Aurora I loved her poem. =^..^=

I spent half a semester on this one poem it seemed, in an English course focusing on T.S. Eliot/James Joyce.
I can still read this and get tingly all over . . . my favorite poem of all time (too long to post in its entirety).
Let us go then, you and I,
When the evening is spread out against the sky
Like a patient etherized upon a table;
Let us go, through certain half-deserted streets,
The muttering retreats
Of restless nights in one-night cheap hotels
And sawdust restaurants with oyster-shells:

OK..
Bascially, cookies sit in your computer, saving information on websites you use, and remember certian things.. like your password to here and your username. Its also a cookie that that puts "new" onposts you haven;t read.. it remembers which posts you have read you see.
Spyware does something similar, but has the ability to send this information "home" (ie, to someone else computer). there is alot of different spyware.. Gator, the most common, is pretty innocuous in that it works like a cookie and remembers infor for you. But there are others that record all your key strokes and sends them home - so has the ability to send someone all your passwords and even your credit card number. Another one I had, called dialler, overrides a dial up modem, and dials a high toll number instead of your normal ISP's number.. I think its a $2 a minute number it calls, so someone in the US infected could end up with a very large phone bill without knowing why.

I read that Ad aware will keep Kazaa from working. If you use Ad aware you have to reinstall Kazaa afterwards and you have to accept whatever spyware Kazaa installs because that's what supports Kazaa. I was just wondering if you knew about that.
(Kazaa is a Napster-type service for file sharing. I haven't even used it but I keep thinking of trying it.)

I know the book - isn't it wonderful? TS Eliot loved his kitties & Jennyanydots was such an industrious girl! Hemingway was another softie for cats & his old place is still maintained with lots of cats about as a tourist site.
If you ever feel down, Tony, make Aurora read poems to you from "Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats". Who knows? It might inspire her. Hint to her that she could be a big name star in famous cat food commercials like Morris & earn lots of money. Then you could retire & live on he earnings, but don't tell her I told you this.
