Bluebirds of Happiness

Posted by beardedlady on March 11, 2003, at 8:50:43

Well, a few weeks ago, some sewer pipes exploded at our neighborhood park. The river was filled with 200,000 tons of raw sewage. My husband and I were interviewed about it on the news.

I hadn't been to the park since then--too snowy, too smelly, too muddy. But I went yesterday.

Right in the grove of trees at the park entrance were six to eight Eastern Bluebirds. I have seen blue birds before (we have lots of jays and kingfishers and ingigo buntings, which are really black, but that's another story), but I'd never seen a bluebird until yesterday morning.

They are soooooo blue. It's the brightest, most unnatural blue I have ever seen. And they have these cute little round bellies of white and rust. They are gorgeous.

I told my husband about it, and he went last night to a different part of the park and saw six to eight bluebirds too!

So I went this morning with my camera. Wouldn't you know it, when you come with a camera, you almost never get what you want.

But as I was leaving, I saw them again--in the same grove of trees as yesterday. (I passed that grove on my way in, but it was bare of bird.) What a brilliant sight! It made me happy yesterday, and it made me thrilled today!

Now I know why they call them the bluebirds of happiness.

I hope you all find your bluebirds very soon.

Yes yes! My mother constantly feeds birds in her yard, and will occasionally get some bluebirds, as well as orioles. Nothing like it to lift the spirits as we sit so quietly and watch them in awe...all summer long she also has treefulls of hot yellow finches. They are so busy, yet oddly, it is so soothing to watch them against soft green leaves and the deep blue sky.

God, I love beasties. I have a furry one asleep on my lap right now...my best buddy.

Wow, bluebirds among the sewage. It's like a message from the universe, yes there is s*** everywhere, but there are bluebirds too. Awwww.

I've never seen a bluebird.

Is that the key to happiness?

The beggar man and his mighty king are only diff'rent in name,
For they are treated just the same by fate.
Today a smile and tomorrow tears,
We're never sure what's in store,
So learn your lesson before too late, so

(refrain)
Be like I, hold your head up high,
Till you find a bluebird of happiness.
You will find greater peace of mind
Knowing there's a bluebird of happiness.
And when he sings to you,
Though you're deep in blue,
You will see a ray of light creep through,
And so remember this, life is no abyss,
Somewhere there's a bluebird of happiness.

Life is sweet, tender and complete
When you find the bluebird of happiness.
You will find perfect peace of mind
When you find the bluebird of happiness.
Two hearts that beat as one,
'Neath a new found sun,
We are in a world that's just begun,
And you must sing his song, as you go along,
When you find the bluebird of happiness.

Maybe I just need to squawk my head off at anyone who comes near what's mine, and drive them off with some dramatic pecking. Sure beats turning it on myself. Ooooh, what a lovely thought. Maybe I'll get in bluebird mode before work tomorrow.

I wasn't aware that bluebirds had a mean streak. I know bluejays are terribly unfriendly; they used to swoop down and peck the head of my cat (who deserved it, I'm afraid, as she was a talented and prolific bird killer).

But bluebirds? I saw them today (three days out of four!), and one actually went after another bird, but I see this all the time in the bird kingdom--with all kinds of birds. I consider all animals somewhat territorial, but they aren't all aggressive.

So I can't speak to bluebird traits, but when the time comes that you really need to step up to the plate (like when your family's life is threatened), you will. We all deal with family and life stuff differently. Don't get down on yourself because you're not aggressive. You won't be happier trying to wear qualities that don't fit on you.

Here, it is mockingbirds who are the real annoyance. They are so f***ing territorial that I can't even sit in my own yard. They attack my cats too, mercilously. My poor Dusty is so stupid she has a hard time catching dry cat food, and the mockingbirds take advantage of her meekness. The birds don't bother my InkSpot; they know better. :-)

(both cats are 95% indoor and do not present a threat to the neighborhood. InkSpot is rarely out more than 5 minutes at a time, and Dusty is afraid to go outside.)

And yet they still complain that I brought home the wrong thing. They want tuna, not salmon. They want beef, not turkey. Geez, they should just catch it themselves. :-) (actually InkSpot is very funny trying to catch the thanksgiving turkey, but that's another story.)

Not to mention clean their litter boxes every day. Uggh. :-(
