Dilated pupils....

Posted by jodie on February 5, 2003, at 23:36:43

Can insomnia cause pupils to dilate? All day, after only getting 2 hours of sleep last night, I have been bouncing off the walls. I decided to drive an hour away to visit my parents, grandpa, etc, at 7:30 this morning. This was not planned, and unusual for me.

I have been using the phone/cell phone all day. Just calling anyone I can think of and talking my head off. I've lost my car keys 3 times today, like putting them somewhere and not remembering where. When talking to everyone today, at least once in every conversation, I would just stop in the middle of a sentence and totally forget what I was talking about. I noticed my hands shaking all day. My pupils are dilated. And no, I haven't been taking any illegal drugs, just my usual Klonopin dose, and Lexapro 10 mg. I tried cocaine once a long time ago, and thats almost how I feel, its lasted all day. It's now 11:50 pm here, and I still feel the same.

My family probably thinks I'm on drugs. I took my grandpa out for lunch, and I just kept talking, and realized, I had only eaten a couple of bites if my food. I went to my parents house, and talked my head off to my mom. I talked so much she barely got a word in. On my way back home, I passed my exit, without realizing, and drove about 30 min. out of the way.

Anyone have any idea what is wrong with me?? I am so not myself. I even had a little paranoia while driving home, there was this car following me really closely, so I tapped on my breaks so they would back off a little, I was passing a semi, and going the speed limit. I finally got over, the car passed me got in front of me, and kept slowing down, finally to 40 mph on the interstate. I finally passed the car, and they did the same thing, got really close, they finally backed off a little. I felt they were following me, they kept turning everywhere I did. Once I got into my hometown, I pulled into a police station, they just kept driving down the road. Who knows, maybe they were following me, or maybe were just happening to go the same way I was. During all this (the car) I had a lump in my throat, my heart was racing, and I was extremely nervous. No hallucinations, or delusions.

Any ideas? Could this all be from not having much sleep in a week???

Hun, you'd better call your pdoc. You might need some mood stabilizing about now. Lack of sleep is a common trigger for hypomania. This is generally the point where it stops being exhilirating and starts turning unpleasant. Take care of yourself, and check in with a professional.

A concerned,

Dinah

I'm calling my pdoc first thing in the morning. So it sounds like mania to you??? I started feeling strange a couple of days ago, but was thinking it was just a little stress, I just didn't have good luck with mood stabilizers... I'm nervous.

Hi Jodie..

Best do what Dinah says---sounds like your kind of panicky/paranoid--over vidgilant (sp?)(aware)
If you think you're manic usually you aren't--other people notice it first (a manic usually is in denial) hypomanic maybe--I don't know
See what doc says...

I feel almost normal today. Just really tired and cranky. Don't know what was up yesterday. It was so strange. Right now I'm not having the racing thoughts or talking very much.

I haven't yet called my pdoc today. I went to sleep around 2 am and awoke at noon today. The best sleep I've had in a long time. I really think it was from going days w/o having much sleep, it just caught up to my and caused slight psychosis or something...hell I don't know. My appt. is on the 17th, so maybe I should just wait until then to talk to my pdoc, unless of course I have another day like yesterday.

By the way, I figured out the dilated pupils. I have 2 cats, but I'm allergic to them. I occasionally get the sneezes, and itchy red eyes, especially when I pick them up, pet them, then touch my nose or eyes. I use Opcon A eye drops (for allergies). It says right on the bottle that it can cause pupil dialtion. I kept using it yesterday!!! So that explains that!!!!

I went back and looked at my post last night about all of this, and I barely remember typing any of it. Strange... Sorry the post sounded like I was crazy or something.

But, I really do feel better today, like I said just tired. I almost feel like I ran a marathon or something yesterday.

Thanks for caring!!

Jodie

Lack of sleep will do that to you. Just make sure you keep an eye on yourself. :)
