motivation (or rather the lack thereof)

Posted by likelife on February 5, 2003, at 1:50:02

Questions of motivation baffle me. It's almost 1:00 in the morning, I'm in the midst of a paper that is due shortly, and I'm having the hardest time getting myself to just sit down and do it. And no, being on this board isn't helping :)

I can't seem to apply the principle of delayed gratification here. I know that in the long run I will be much happier if I get some sleep and get my work done, yet...it's so much easier now to do what I want.

Yipes. Who knows why we do the things we do...

I'm stuck in a cyclical pattern. I work like crazy to get something done, then afterwards I slump into migraines and irritable bowel and grogginess and depression.

Then I get up and start the cycle over again. If I could just get up to date once, I could even things out, at least some.

I had constant deadlines from October to December, and a lot of January was lost to ill health. In fact, I'm still having migraines. But I'm starting the cycle yet again.

I've done the same, mostly in relation to school. Midway through the quarter I'm working on little sleep, lots of caffeine, and maybe bending the rules of time a little. By the end of the quarter, I'm just insane. Take a little break, regain sanity, start all over again...

Do we ever feel like we're really caught up? (A vision of me running on a hamster wheel comes to mind quite often.)

A hamster wheel describes it well. Except I keep losing my darn footing and go for a few topsy turvy spins before I regain it.

I just know that there has to be a way to catch up and work at a steady, productive pace with only the periodic emergency.
