I'm not sure I get it. Is he saying loneliness is a crisis of the self, not necessarily related to an absence of companionship?

I'm not sure how the learned quoter would answer that question, but I do know it's very possible to be lonely while in the company of others. A sad example is loneliness in marriage.Shar
