All of the "soft" subjects in a university, e.g., psychology, sociology, archaeology, anthropology, linguistics, political science, languages, literature, athletics, teaching, etc. Often biology, chemistry, physics, geology, and mathematics are included, and they too often have the same net result as Bobby said ("You want fries with that?").

As a comparison, here are some other groupings which are not considered "liberal arts":

- Business and accounting
- Engineering (electronics, mechanical engineering, computer engineering, civil engineering, etc.)
- Law
- Medicine, nursing, and pharmacology

As a final note, most students of law, medicine, nursing, and pharmacology also have a liberal arts background and perhaps are even degreed at some level prior to beginning these fields.

(who got his degree in Electical Engineering -- if that doesn't make you crazy, nothing will!)

***thanks Ted. Funny but these are all the subjects I'd be interested in if I ever made it to university. I don't think it should be made light of Bobby. It seems to me that you did one hell of a lot of work and you should be proud of the accomplishment. I would give anything to be able to attend university for any one of the above subjects. I'm jealous.
take care both of you

Tina, Tina, Tina,

> I would give anything to be able to attend university for any one of the above subjects. I'm jealous.

You can do anything if you want to badly enough. Well, almost anything -- you might not succeed as an astronaut or a ballet dancer. In the past I successfully have taught clerical assistants how to use a computer so that they were more skilled than most of the engineers with whom they worked.

Sure, you might need some help & guidance, but nothing in the world beats desire & ambition.

Tina,

> ....except mental illness and panic disorder Ted. I'll never be able to do some things. Never. It's too late now.

It's never too late. I have an 84-year-old friend who dropped out of school in the 9th grade and, after retiring from carpentry, taught himself to use computers, built telescopes and spectrographs, etc. His memory is completely shot and his hands shake like the dickens, but he has developed skills & tools to get around these handicaps.

I got my university degree in the throws of undiagnosed & untreated bipolar disorder and OCD. I think that counts as mental illness. As for the panic disorder, you can develop skills to help you learn without it interfering too greatly -- even with agoraphobia. Also, there may be some things you will never be able to do, but that doesn't mean there are *NO THINGS* you will be able to do. Again, it's all a matter of ambition & desire. Don't give up on yourself so easily.

Hey Bobby:

I am sorta in the same boat. Here are a few ideas for you, as part of my spiral into depression was because of my liberal arts education not getting me a good job, at first. Sadly, this world tends to value the people who think like robots, like business and science(less so) majors. (No offence..sorry..but the arts require a depth of creativity those others can't offer.)

Bobby, you might want to look into a few things. One of them may be in a counselling position of some sort, and this may require going back to school. If you can afford it...I say *do it*...as I am going to in the Fall. Even if you don't have the money, check out scholorships..grants..etc..there are MANY available.

Second..you could look into maybe teaching. They are *crying* for all sorts of teachers..as many are now retiring. You don't get a lot of respect...many morons and idiots like politicians seem to make teachers sound bad...when the teachers are the ones who MAKE our childrens futures. The F&%king government DOESN'T provide the money needed for education..instead providing tax-breaks for corporate whores like Enron, WoldCom, and thos mega-corporations.

My last piece of advice...NEVER, EVER work in the corporate world. THEY are EVIL...greedy...selfish..and are what ruin this world.

Stand tall with your education...there ARE many opportunities...you may just have to really look. You might even start by volluntering(sp?). Helping others SHOULD be our only job in this world.

Peace..
Jay

You're stronger than I am Ted. I have no strength in me at all. I can't stand up to the panic no matter what coping skills I'm given. I take klonopin to get through normal everyday activities but the amount that I would have to take to just walk onto a university campus would likely put me to sleep therefore rendering the whole learning experience null and void.
I am impressed by your 84 year old friend. Wow. Again though, he has more strength than I will ever have.
I'm not brave Ted or I would have killed myself by now.
thanks though.

Thanks Ted. I didn't mean to stir up so many replies--but their hearts were in the right place.
