borderline peronalitys

Posted by moodyblue on July 19, 2002, at 12:57:08

i was diagnosed with bpd about 3 months ago. my counilor did not tell me what it was just that it was diffrent from bipolar disorder. i thought that was pretty wrong of her. she said they were going to use medication as a last resort. i dont mind not being a zombie but if it will help me and make it so i am able to function i am all for it. my mood swings are so rapid and i can not control them. i could be all lovey one minute and i will wanna hurt ya the next. i am not sure what caused this sudden onset of this disorder but i wish i could make it go away. it is making it hard for me to go out in public because i dont wanna lash out at some poor unsuspecting person who looks at me funny (thats how bad it is) i dont know what else to do my family is not supportive neither are my friends. i have no one to turn to so i thought i would turn to the net to see if they could help me.
any tips or suggestions on what i can do to gain control of my life?

Hi Blue,

Not all medications will make you into a zombie. I'm on a mood stabilizer (low dose) which is very helpful, but doesn't cause me to feel different from the way I usually feel. And I hear that there has been success in some people with atypical antipsychotics. Perhaps you could get some further information on the med board (follow the link at the top of the page). I don't know all that much about them.

Dialectical behavior therapy has had a great deal of success in dealing with BPD. Does anyone in your area offer it? It's impossible to get around here except in a hospital setting. But you might want to look into it.

You might also think about getting a second opinion. Psychiatric diagnosis is more of an art than a science. Someone else might have a different take on your situation. And of course a full medical workup is always a good idea. Hormones, etc. might be involved.

I think it's great that you are looking for help. That's the first and biggest step.

I'm also dx'd BPD. I have found Zyprexa (and anti psychotic) to be of great help. I do feel slightly zompified but I'm on a slightly higher dose than most people seem to get help from.

I've also just been put on Ciprimil (Celexa in US) and even thought SSRI's haven't helped in the past the results so far ( 3 weeks in) seem quite positive - its really helped my suicidal and self harming thoughts.

I'm also on a waiting list for DBT which I've heard very good reports with people with BPD.

Theres alot fo web sites out there about it so have a search. I hope you find some help

Nikki

I would definitely get a second opinion because some mental health professionals are too quick to diagnose BPD.
