Bipolar or hormonal???

Posted by Manda on June 21, 2002, at 10:24:08

Hey, everyone,
Sorry it's been so long. As some of you know, I've been diagnosed as clinically depressed and suffering from GAD, but my pdoc, therapist, etc. have been thinking that I may be bipolar. I've been on Effexor XR for about 6 weeks now, and it worked wonders until last week. It's my third ad, and the others 'pooped out' on me after a month or two. Last week, I started having days when I feel really depressed, but really agitated and irritable at the same time. They come and go; in other words, one day I'll be down and irritable, and the next day I'll be fine, and so on. So... I'm wondering if this is the end of my ad, or if it's the result of hormones, since it is the right time for that to be a factor. How can you tell the difference?? Any thoughts? Thanks,
Manda

I think the biggest factor of an AD-induced manic state is the speed- usually it happens within 2-3 days after starting an AD. So, I would have my hormones checked (and thyroid) and see what happens. Good luck- Judy

Manda

I've found with effexor that it took four months to feel the full affect, and I had to keep increasing the dosage. But often with pms, the mood changes and other symptoms come in surges. Hang in there!

BEST WISHES
