Weird Feeling

Posted by Dave1 on May 13, 2002, at 18:35:53

Hi

My depression seems to give me alot confusion, memory loss and other weird things. I feel like things aren't real. Familiar people and surroundings now seem unfamiliar. Also, sometimes I feel like I'm not part or my body or sort of outside it.

Does anyone else get these feelings or similiar ones. If so what can be done?

Dave

Yeah, Dave, I get those feelings but not just from depression. More so, I feel disconnected with reality, "stuck between dimensions" I call it, when my thyroid functioning is low. My thoughts get jumbled & I'm not sure what I was even thinking or said. A bit like a half-dream state, an unreality. I also got that when my adrafinil ran out & the benefits of it slowly faded away.

Have you had your thyroid functions checked? A simple blood test takes care of it. It's more common for women between 30-50 to start developing hypothyroidism but it still happens to guys too.

IsoM made a good suggestion although when I have thoses types of feelings I think it is the depression. I might for instance be more easily stressed and not then be able to think clearly or I'm just distracted or preoccupied. Sometimes I feel like I'm not living my life so much as watching it. It's sort of like everything then is an out of body experience. I don't know whether this is depression or maybe too much therapy - it gets to be hard not to over analyze everything.

The thing I hate most about feeling 'weird' is that it makes me think I'm going insane from the depression. I'm trying to figure out what is causing the weird feelings. I was really stressed out about something and I thought that was the cause. But when that stressor went away, the weird feelings didn't dissipate. Now, I have to reevalute or 'over analyze' as you mentioned - ha ha.

Bye,

Dave

Not sure if its the same, but I certainly get problems remembering things when I'm depressed. Partly as I am so preoccupied with just trying to survive thru the next painful minute...

I also get a change in how I see things. Its hard to describe it- its like there is half an inch of pitch black darkness between me and the world, which I have to look thru. Makes things seem more unreal.

When you feel very anxious things can seem unreal, and you can feel detached- its a normal self protective reaction to extreme stress.

No particular ideas on coping with it- checking out with your pdoc that its nothing to worry about might be a good start. Then when you feel it happening, you know its just another feature of how you are feeling and not something awful?

If its to do with your depression, it should also improve as your depression improves, so stick with whatever you are doing to get better, too.
