a man i know eats heart salad
swears
it keeps him young.
he plunges heads and stalks
in icy water
artfully undressing artichokes
unsnapping celery limbs
coddling the cabbage as its layers fall.
with the hearts assembled in a bowl
he pushes cuffs above his elbows
parts
his moustache with right thumb
and forefinger
angling the coarse hairs
just above the pale flesh of upper lip
and draws a heart toward him
mouth wide
tongue shivering
eyes closed.
he leans back and takes a slow
deliberate bite
crunching like broken bones.a man i know eats heart salad
lives
alone.

I LOVE that poem, but I can't name the author. Argh.

good company
strangers are good:
the hairdresser on her smoke break,
left boot lug sole up against brick,
who smiles at my daughter;
the drive-thru teller,
lollipops at the ready,
who keeps my fertility her prayers;
the man behind me in line,
tissue outstretched,
who follows me to the car.friends are good:
the one who just had a new baby
and solicits advice;
the one who invites me more
than I accept;
the one who gives and gives,
taking;
the one who loves me always,
even when I don’t.alone is good:
the dogs asleep on two scraps of sun;
a bit of boogie-woogie,
upbeat and swingy;
the port, sweet;
the tub, hot;
the kitchen knives, sharp.the bearded lady (alias) 2001

I'm blown-away! I'm only good at putting mundane things into words. I'm constantly amazed at the talent on this board. May I copy & keep your two poems for my own use, please?

Um...I think so. The first was published; the second is still being shopped around. I'm very anal about putting my name on things—it's everywhere. So I kind of cringe at the thought of posting poems, since I'm somewhat anonymous here and prefer to be at this point. (Though if anyone from my city read my posts, they'd probably know it's me!)
Thanks for the compliment.

Just want them on my HD, so I can go back to them to read sometimes - not for anyone else. If you'd rather not, I won't & I mean it.
