A Poem for Nobody - THIRTYSEVEN HILL

Posted by kid_A on October 10, 2001, at 17:51:19

THIRTYSEVEN HILL

the house on thirtyseven
hill is haunted--

ghosts fall from the sky
and lark like tesspassers
when you see a ghost--
you need to put on a smile
put on a glad face
its no great joy to be
a ghost--
neither here, nor there
not up or down
ghosts just want the
riteous high-five

the ghosts in thirtyseven
hill are restless and
bored-- like the daughters
of Nazi hausfraus who
lock up their girls
in their apron--
put them in your pocket
and take them to
your parents-- look
mater, a ghost, we are
to be wed--
i want to be the
ghost daddy

if you settle
your differences and
mary-- you must do so
on an auspicious day
you must put on your
Christmas suit and
float down the aisle
as if butterflies
and your ghost will
be born a real girl
rich in her new life
fresh from the
maquiladora

ghosts have sex with
anonymous stranger ghosts
it puts them in their
right minds again
it makes them feel real
again---
it makes them laugh
out loud
it makes them touch
briefly, their
candle soul
and puts them one
step further away
from peace
the more that ghosts
try to be real
the more unreal
they become, the
more they snuff
out their
candles

the ghosts are
building houses--
one on top of the other
they are trying to
build a ladder to
the sky
they are trying to
rip out their
hearts to reach
heaven
they are trying
to find their way
back home--
thirtyseven hill
is stacked up
like cards
it's a babel tower
and each ghost
stands on the
other's shoulders
the ghosts are
the ladder
they are building
the houses inside
of themselves
they long to be
touched by God
they long for that
goodnight kiss
and nearly just
nearly they can
touch the gates
but heat gives way
to stillness, and
silence to defeat,
and fiery the ghosts
fall-- back down
again, no nearer
an answer
than
the center of
the earth

i am a ghost in my own
house-- a young ghost
with a deck of
cards, layed out
before me-- asking
questions that
have
no answers.

dear kid,

i like this one alot

it reminds me of boo radley & me

what is a maquiladora? i couldn't find it in the dictionary.

"tesspassers"--did you mean trespassers? because "tesspassers" reminds me of the tesseract, like from the Madeliene L'Engle *Wrinkle in Time* books.

> what is a maquiladora? i couldn't find it in the dictionary.

a maquiladora is a small town built around a factory or somesuch minimal wage facility in mexico, the workers of the factory live in the maquiladora

i remember that book, never read it though, it was a hit when i was a kid... i probably did mean whatever the correct spelling of trespass is! :), i usually spell check my work when I'm sure I'm done w/ it
