Health Insurance -- Individual

Posted by Simcha on August 3, 2001, at 7:51:15

OK, my health insurance company has decided to pull out of the state of Iowa in 6 months. I am a contractor and as such I have individual health insurance. Now that I am getting treatment for my depression, how hard will it be to find another company that will insure me?

Also, what about pre-existing conditions? Could they refuse to cover treatment for my depression? And if so, for how long?

Is there anyone else around here who has faced something similar? If so what insurance did you find to be the best for your situation?

I'm 31, male, physically healthy, and I don't smoke or abuse drugs....

Simcha,
My family and I are in a similar situation because our COBRA coverage is going away this month. In looking around for new insurance (individual family) my husband was upfront re: my mental illness. We were told that while we will be able to get coverage (probably higher cost though), most ins. companies will investigate your illness (back and forth with pdoc) ad nauseum, so leave yourself MONTHS to find new coverage. I guess we were naive to think it could be accomplished in a matter of weeks. Geez - it's not like getting a *mortgage* or anything! (the mortgage took two days!) Incredible.

Marie

p.s. Hope you can discern the intended sarcasm here.

LOL!!! Thanks Marie!

I hear the sarcasm.....

I have 6 months and I've started the process by searching on-line. There are some wonderful tools to access quotes on the Internet. I'll keep you posted on what happens in my situation. I don't relish the thought of paying through the nose for insurance just because of my depression when otherwise I am perfectly healthy.... Oh well... That's life.
